Rapper Drake: Following God’s Plan
By Garrett Athey
Toronto rapper, Aubrey Graham, better known by his stage name “Drake,” recently made many generous contributions to the Miami community in Florida. The donations were involved in the making of his recent music video for his new hit song, “God’s Plan.”
In the video, actual footage shows the rapper committed many kind acts such as buying groceries for shoppers at a supermarket, giving a car for someone who could not afford it, and donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to people in need, charities, and local schools. The people in the video who Drake helps are overwhelmed by the rapper’s contributions and many cry tears of joy. Drake said the project was the most important thing he has ever done.
The whole scheme started with the release of the song “God’s Plan,” on January 19th, 2018. The song was an instant hit and it quickly made its way to number one on the Billboard Top 100. It remained number one for six weeks before dropping to the number two spot where it remains today. “God’s Plan” was released with another song, “Diplomatic Immunity” apart of a small mixtape entitled “Scary Hours.” Drake has a history of producing hit after hit and has consistently had a song in the Top 100 for the past several years. Furthermore, he is currently one of the most popular music artists in the world.
People have mixed feelings about the video, some feel it was touching while others feel that the stunt was for publicity. For those that think the video was done out of the kindness of Drake’s heart, they are inspired by the rapper’s actions. Senior Brenden Rose said, “The video was touching and I think that more rappers should help the community like Drake did.” It cannot be denied that Drake did significantly help a lot of people in the production of the video. No matter how much negative criticism surrounds the video, Drake did donate a million dollars to make the Miami community a better place.
The question remains as to whether or not Drake’s actions were genuine or just for attention. People like Senior Jordan Taylor who said, “The video was good but if Drake really wanted to be genuine, he would have taken all the proceeds from the song and video and put it towards helping even more people.” This is a good point, the fact that Drake filmed all his kind acts he did and turned it into a video gives the impression that he wanted some kind of recognition from it. This makes people turn away from the video because although it is nice to see people getting help, no one wants to see Drake boast about how good of a person he is.
The “God’s Plan” video is a unique display of music but also a good show of humanity. If everyone with the means to do so could help the community like Drake did, the world would be a better place. For the people that hate on the video, it must be understood that the bottom line is that a person is making the world a better place and helping those who need it. The world can expect many more spectacular music and acts from Drake in the future because he has always been a fantastic artist.
