The Fun and Thrill at Merriweather

4/19/2018

By Alexis Kominos & Jessica Lipman

I went to Chainsmokers last summer at Merriweather and the experience was great. I bought the tickets for about 50 dollars. We planned an uber to take us to Merriweather and when we got there I was already having a great time. It lasted for hours and I did not want the night to
end. The weather was warm, all my friends were there, the music was great, and it was the best day I have had in awhile. The concert was well worth my money and I am excited to go to other one’s this upcoming summer.

Merriweather Post Pavilion is the home of concerts in Howard County. The amphitheater has been hosting shows and festivals ever since it’s opening in 1967. Attracting all ages, Merriweather allows audiences to different genres of music and have the opportunity to see their favorites artists during everyone’s favorite time of the year, concert season.

There is a variety of different events coming to Merriweather this summer. There are concerts and festivals that have sparked many peoples attention throughout the years. Some of the more popular concerts consist of, but is not limited to, Kenny Chesney (August 22nd), Lady Antebellum (August 2nd), Florida Georgia Line (June 7th), Jason Aldean (May 24th), Paramore (June 23rd), Luke Bryan (June 14th), and Dierks Bentley (May 18th). Some festivals at Merriweather this year are Southern Rock Classic, Rock Classic, Capital Jazz Fest, Vans Warped Tour, and Summer Spirit Festival. Most of the concerts start at six or seven and the festivals start earlier in the day.

Many people from Glenelg and all over Howard County have been to the concerts before. Ben Kishter, a Junior at Glenelg High School says, “I went to Sunday in the Country last summer which was a combination of many country artists. The concert was a lot of fun and I am excited to go to more next summer.” With new entertainment coming this summer, many students from Glenelg High School are excited to attend the concerts coming up.

The anticipation is high for these new popular artists making an appearance at Merriweather. Another Junior at Glenelg, Gillian Marx, says that, “[She is] excited for Dierks Bentley, Kenny Chesney, and Florida Georgia Line. Although the environment is very nice, the food and tickets are both expensive. It is recommended tickets be bought early in advance to potentially get a cheaper price.” In her experience, “the concerts are more of a social event, rather than listening to the music.” Again, the loud music, many people, and new friends are all something to look forward to this summer at Merriweather.

This upcoming concert season is anticipated to be full of new entertainment and the younger crowd to come together to enjoy new artists appearing for the first time at Merriweather, with also some familiar faces who have performed before. The crowds of people grow each year, and Merriweather is still a hotspot for good music, and some exciting social fun.
