The Glenelg Literary Magazine is a publication primarily for creative writing and the arts. The name of the magazine is All For You, seeking to build community, encourage creativity, and give the Glenelg community a chance to showcase their literary talent. We publish quarterly magazines with a topic related to the time of its release as well as many different categories we would hope to see you participate in! There is a lot of freedom for the literary works since you are able to write about anything you would like. Plus, you do not have to be a member to have your work published in the magazine! In addition, we also send out quarterly polls and the chance to ask questions for our Q&A section, which can both be found in your canvas inbox.
Lit Mag meets every Tuesday after school from 2:15 to 3:00 in room 162 with our lovely teacher sponsor Ms. Frank! To see our past and current works or to submit your original work to the magazine, please visit our website https://glenelgmagazine.weebly.com. https://glenelgbookclub.weebly.com/
The Glenelg Book Club meets once a month on a Friday from 2:15—4:00. Book Club members have Book Club Kindles which contain all the books for the year, as well as many books from the past 11 years when it has been sponsored by Ms. Currie-Scott. They read the MD One Book through a MD Humanities Grant, and 3 of the MD Black Eyed Susans for High School so they can vote for the state award. The remainder of the books are chosen through member recommendations. The club historically has about 30 readers who represent many different groups from GHS. It has always contained a mix of students from various school groups, grades, diverse back grounds and genders. We have discussions and do activities related to the books we read and the universal themes within them, as well as relate these themes to our lives utilizing a modified peace circle format. All are welcome to join us for snacks, a love of books, and the best discussions ever! (Even if you did not get to read the whole book.) Chris Lewis, Nico Wenzel, and Sierra Rohmann are the officers who keep the club running this year for Ms. Currie-Scott. Glenelg’s Model United Nations meets every other Thursday at 2:15 in room 159. Their president is Daniel Zheng, a senior passionate about geopolitical issues and discussion who has been a member of this club since his freshman year. Alongside him, vice president Zorais Naroo has also shared his dedication towards this club throughout his time here. Mrs. Jansson is their sponsor, and shares their passion for global issues.
Meetings are rather informal, with debates and research-based discussions surrounding current events and breaking news being a key factor for most meetings. However, Daniel Zheng and other experienced members plan on attending countywide and statewide forums around springtime next year. But for now, meetings are focuses on building the skills necessary for members to succeed in such events. Waqas Mahmood, James Peng, Jackson Hufman and other valuable members work with help to inform Glenelg students about worldwide issues and problem solving, important skills for everyone to utilize. The Robotiators, a nationally acclaimed robotics team, meets every Tuesday and Thursday right after school in room 174, 175, and 176 from 2:15 to around 4:00. When January comes, the Glenelg Robotiators meet every school day from 2:15 to 4:15, and on Saturdays, they meet from 9 am to 4 pm. The Robotiators build, code, decorate, and designs robots that compete in competitions.
In 2019 and 2020, the Robotiators won finals, third in safety, and best autonomous code. The Glenelg Robotiators is the first robotics team established in Howard County, which has been successfully running and competing for around twenty years. Alongside all the competitions, the Robotiators reach out to the community by making and donating masks and printed 3D models of STEM kits for underprivileged kids. The sponsor of the Glenelg Robotiators, Raymond Gerstner, explained how the club is about more than just the robot, “...it’s to be here, be involved, and be part of a team”. Mr. Gerstner, alongside the leads of Robotics, Vivian Contreras, Jacob Lee, Colin Costella, and Ryan Cather, all work together to promote curiosity, problem-solving, and knowledge towards anyone who is interested in the STEM field. |
