By: Shaun Inake According to numerous studies conducted across the US, 40-45% of Americans say that fall is their favorite season. Whether it’s the fall colors, the cooler weather, or the many holidays celebrated like Halloween or Thanksgiving, many agree that autumn is a great time to go outside and see what places have to offer. Fortunately, Howard County offers many different fall activities to both residents and visitors. There are several hiking trails in Howard County and nearby counties. Well-known trails including Centennial Park, Patapsco State Park, and Savage Park are noted for their scenic fall trails, showing off the autumn colors and falling leaves. Many people enjoy going by themselves, however, taking family or friends with you will brighten your experience. Even taking your pet for a walk in one of these parks would make your hike even more enjoyable. Unfortunately, some of these parks can get busy on weekends, as many are looking to experience the fall weather. If you prefer more peaceful walks, plan a trip in the morning or evening when the parks aren’t as busy.
Howard County has a few farms open to the public throughout the year. However, the fall season usually offers something not typically offered during the rest of the year. Whether it’s pumpkin picking at Sharp’s at Waterford Farm, hay rides at Larriland Farm, or spending quality family time at Clark’s Elioak Farm, many kinds of activities are offered for all ages. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a pumpkin to decorate your house during October and November, these farms have the best pumpkins to choose from. Those interested in cooking may also be interested, as some even offer their produce and goods to be purchased. Halloween marks the end of October, and Howard County offers many different festivals and activities for the holiday. Different parks, shops, and other areas offer unique and fun experiences for visitors and residents alike. If you are into ghost tours, Old Ellicott City offers two of interest: Mt. Misery and Main Street haunted tours. Savage Hill also boasts an impressive ghost walk that is well worth the price of admission. There are plenty of other locations in Howard County yet to become quite as popular; nevertheless, they are dedicated to providing guests with the best visit possible. Though they may be difficult to find, driving around the county is all it takes to possibly run into a fall attraction you and others can enjoy.
