Shield Staff Favorite Holiday Activities

Need ideas of what to do with your friends and family over winter break? Take a peek at the Glenelg Shield's favorite winter activities!

Mr. Illuzzi: Each year we go to Gaver Farm and cut down our tree. To the outsider, watching our family of five meander through the seemingly endless amount of trees until we finally zero in on “the one,” must be a source of hilarity – but I wouldn’t have it any other way. And there’s nothing better than the smell of the fresh pine once the tree is upright in our family room. 

Vanessa Buechler: One of my favorite things to do around the holiday season is to get comfy on the couch, and watch some holiday movies with my family. With the fireplace on and the cold weather outside, I find the perfect setting to get cozy with my family while watching classic movies like “Home Alone” and “Elf”.  

Sam Wilmeth : My favorite activity to do during the holiday season is ice skating with my friends. I love playing and watching hockey, and having the opportunity to skate on both indoor and outdoor rinks is such a great party of the winter season. Going with friends also makes it a lot more fun.

Blake Hill: For me, I always have a great time around the holidays decorating the house, and watching Christmas movies with my family. I also love to listen to all sorts of Christmas music, especially some of the music I own on vinyl.

Ariel O'Leary: A favorite activity of mine during the holiday season is to open a fresh package of hot chocolate bombs and make endless amounts of hot cocoa. I love to make my whole family cups after we have spent the entire day playing in the snow. 

Basith Syed: I love relaxing during the holiday season. During the holidays, I watch TV and eat blue Takis. I also like to spoil myself by indulging in a large variety of sweet treats and candies.

Kemi Olalere: I love spending time with friends and family during the holidays. Snow is always nice, especially since my house has a huge hill that all the kids in the neighborhood love to sled down. Cooking and food is also front and center in my house during the holidays, and now that I’m older I’m learning to enjoy being in the kitchen with my mom, aunties, and cousins, learning to make traditional Nigerian food. 

Lex Bowen: My favourite thing to do during the holidays is bake with my friends and family. In my family, food is a very important part of the holiday season, and there's always something good to eat in the house.

Valerie Menendez: I just enjoy being surrounded by close friends and family, whether that entails coordinating Friendsgivings, and Secret Santas amongst friends, or just binging my fav seasonal movies. For someone who doesn't love the weather during this time of year I do enjoy the seasonal activities such as ice skating, building snowmen/ gingerbread houses, hot cocoa, and all things festive.
