By: Henry Kvech Super Bowl 59 is right around the corner, with two of the league's most elite teams battling for their trip to Disney World. But the path to winning the Super Bowl is not for the average princess. As these two storied teams battle it out for the Lombardi, only one will claim the title and write their name in the NFL’s history books.
is that it has been former Patriot and Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady that holds the title. With four rings, including a three-peat, and two MVP’s to his name, Mahomes could easily flip the script on who the majority of people believe is the greatest player of all time. What’s most impressive should the Chiefs win? Mahomes will have done all of this before even turning 30. As the AFC’s number one seed, the Chiefs enjoyed the feeling of a first round bye. When it was their time to play in the divisional round, they faced off against the Houston Texans and second-year quarterback CJ Stroud. Despite Stroud’s sophomore slump rumors, he had proved himself with a win in the wild card round, and with a stout defense, the Texans were anything but pushovers. The Texans fought the entire game, and the score showed; after the third quarter the Chiefs led by just one point in a tightly contested 13-12 game. In the 4th quarter, however, the Chiefs pulled ahead, outscoring the Texans by eight in a 23-14 win. Tight end Travis Kelce, who continues to show up time and time again in the playoffs, caught a late touchdown to put the Chiefs up by eight and send them to the AFC championship. The Chiefs went on to meet a very familiar opponent in the conference game, the Buffalo Bills. Winning 32-29, Mahomes has yet to lose to quarterback Josh Allen’s Bills in the playoffs, now 4-0 in his career. It seems as though these teams meet year after year in the postseason, and continue to give us exciting games to watch, and this was no different. The Chiefs are used to close games, winning all of their last 16 one-score games, and continuing to win in the postseason. It feels almost impossible to bet against Mahomes in the playoffs, but it will be anything but an easy game against the Eagles. The Chiefs were able to beat them in the Super Bowl just two years ago 38-35, but this is a different Eagles team. Will it be Mahomes' magic that brings to life the first ever NFL three-peat, or will it be the team in Philly that exacts its revenge? The Philidelphia Eagles
spent his entire career with the Giants, is in unfamiliar territory in the postseason. That doesn’t seem to phase him, however. In the playoffs he has been averaging 147 rushing yards per game to go along with five touchdowns. A ring would cap off what has been one of the greatest running back seasons ever, and end the Chiefs’ dream of a three-peat.
Last season, the Eagles started out hot, but fizzled out and ended up losing in the wild card to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This season has been a direct contrast; after starting the season with a record of 2-2, the Eagles have won 14 of their last 15 games. Their playoff path started off with the Packers, who, recently with quarterback Jordan Love, have become much more of a threat in the NFC. In a low scoring 22-10 win, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts kept the ball out of harm's way with two touchdown passes, and Barkley continued to impress on the ground. The Eagles defense, much improved this year with additions like all-pro linebacker Zack Baun, intercepted Love three times en route to a wild card victory. The divisional round is where the Eagles met the red-hot Rams, who had just beaten a 14-win Vikings team in the wild card. The snow game went down to the wire, but the Eagles were able to fight their way to a 28-22 win. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford had a chance to take the lead on their final drive of the game, but two consecutive tenacious plays by defensive lineman Jalen Carter stamped the last nail in the Rams’ coffin with less than a minute to go. The Eagles offense was again headlined by Barkley, who amassed a staggering 205 yards rushing with two touchdowns. The Eagles had home field advantage yet again in the NFC championship, as they faced the upstart sixth seeded Commanders. As divisional rivals, there was no love lost in this matchup – with constant scraps ensuing over the course of the game. The Eagles finished the game with seven rushing touchdowns, the most out of any playoff game ever, as well as the most points scored in a conference championship. It all accumulated to a 55-23 win against the surprise Commanders, who were able to go from 4-13 last year to a conference championship appearance the next. This Eagles team is heading into the Super Bowl in just the right place, but they’ll need to keep it up if they want to trump Kansas City’s elite defense.
