By: Finn Reynolds After the news of Shohei Ohtani’s record breaking $700 million contract this offseason, the discussion of a salary cap in baseball, or the lack thereof, is more relevant than ever. Baseball is the only American professional sport without a salary cap and the differences can be seen quite clearly.
To start, the salary cap leads to predictability and unbalanced teams. Now don't get me wrong, there will always be good and bad teams in a prospective season. However, it is normally subject to change over the years. But this is not the case in baseball.

By: Alex Kersh The Super Bowl is the most anticipated annual event in the United States. During this captivating football game, the two best teams in the Nation Football League compete against each other for prestige, legacy and glory.
Super Bowl LVIII will take place on Feb. 11 at 6:30pm. Let’s take a look at what to expect from the teams, and what this Super Bowl will mean to each. By: Hannah Sanborn Bossaball, teqball, polocrosse, and pickleball. What do these unique activities all have in common? All four offer distinctive combinations of multiple other sports, more commonly known as hybrid sports. By: Marisol Stoddard and Victoria Wright With the fall season a wrap, we look back on each team's performance. By: Justin Goldberg A.J. Brown is having an historic season, helping the Philadelphia Eagles, last year’s Super Bowl runner ups, to a 10-2 record. Brown has already broken Hall-of-Famer Calvin Johnson’s record by recording six consecutive games with at least 125 receiving yards. After week 13, Brown has racked up 81 receptions for 1,1164 yards and 7 touchdowns, already the second-most receiving yards in a season in his career.
However, as someone who’s been following Brown for his entire career, the numbers he is currently putting up aren't shocking. What makes Brown so special is his generational talent. By: Madison Stouffer Photo courtesy of Melissa Clemons. Last season, Lindsay Kelley said something felt off, almost missing, following volleyball’s disappointing first-round playoff exit. This season, the senior setter seems to have figured it out. And the team has, too. “In the beginning of the season, we just wanted our team to have the best bond we could,” Kelley said. “Last year's team was not as close as it should have been and that’s a big reason why our season turned out the way it did." By: Marisol Stoddard Packed with five field hockey college commits and two lacrosse college commits, Glenelg’s new Field Hockey coach, Martha Dyer, didn’t have to do much to create a competitive fire at the start of the season.
Still, it is her positivity that is most responsible for the varsity team positioned as the top seed heading into next week’s playoffs with a 8-0 league record. The team has outscored league opponents 82-2 during that stretch. By: Ammaar Rehman Dedication, practice, and teamwork are the cornerstones of success in high school sports.
For the JV football team, these values were tested at the beginning of their season, as Howard County’s issues with bus availability had left players struggling to maintain their competitive edge. Players, like freshman Liam Dunlop, said the challenges and frustrations of not being able to initially play weighed heavily on the team. By: Raina Shah Living with someone who is your best friend and someone you look up to can be stressful when thinking about leaving each other for college.
But not for high school junior Brinkley Eyre. Brinkley has grown up with her sister (AJ Eyre ‘24) and will continue to stay alongside her for her next four years of college. With the 2023-2024 NBA Season approaching this month, it’s fitting to rank who the 25 best players are going into this season so we know who to look out for. All of these players have great talent and can really elevate an NBA team in their own, unique ways. Here are my top picks:
By: Thomas Seaman Entering the new season, the Jets had built up a new energy and aura around the franchise, aided by their feature on HBO’s Hard Knocks. Running into the stadium, the players were surrounded by a level of energy that hasn’t been seen by a New York football team for years.
Unfortunately, this energy quickly evaporated when, after only four snaps into the 23-24 season, the Jets’ curse struck again (see Joe Namath) and the future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers exited with a full achilleas tear. Since their opening win against the Bills, they have gone 2-3 with an impressive loss to the Super Bowl Chiefs and an impressive win against the Eagles. Despite this gut wrenching injury and the team’s precarious start, there is still some hope for the future of the Jets season. By: Oluwatamilore Tokunboh-Salako Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest soccer player of all time.
He has 44 trophies to his name, including 4 Champions League titles and 12 league titles. He has scored 819 goals throughout his illustrious career and he’s been directly involved in well over 1,000. He already has a record breaking 7 Ballon D’or Awards to his name, which honors the best performing soccer player for that year. And he is already one of the favorites to win the prestigious award this year in December. But he shouldn’t. Not when there is another player who has arguably performed at an even higher level: welcome to the conversation Erling Braut Haaland. By: Wyatt Ridgely The 2023 Orioles were really special to watch this year.
I attended game 2 of the ALDS, and it was absolute hysteria. Built up frustration from the long rebuild was finally over as I, along with the rest of a rabidly hungry fan base, was ready for the exciting game. Despite trailing by seven runs after the third inning, we were still in the game. The team's never-say-die-attitude defined the season. The fans did not stop cheering, even when the last out was recorded and the O's found themselves down 2-0 to the eventual ALDS champion Texas Rangers. Still, there was something magical about watching, and experiencing, how different the atmosphere was between regular season and postseason baseball. It's an atmosphere that O's fans certainly hope to repeat next year, and one that, despite the team's early playoff exit, we will all remember for quite some time. Afterall, few anticipated that we would even make it to this moment at the beginning of the season. By: Justin Zulu There is no doubt Glenelg's junior class is going places; some just happen to already know where.
Throughout the fall and winter, nine student-athletes announced their verbal commitments to eight Division-I schools to continue their athletic careers. Lacrosse, field hockey, and soccer programs so far have talked to and contacted multiple standout athletes in the junior class. These athletes include AJ Eyre, Kamryn Henson, Ava Hernandez, Lara Hoeflich, Chloe Key, Ashley Kim, Kate Kim, Stephanie Lathrop, Maggie Metz, and Holland Swope. NCAA Division I coaches can contact female lacrosse student-athletes beginning September 1 of their junior year via verbal offers, emails, calls, texts, and recruiting letters. This change was caused after a study that found that 81 percent of women’s lacrosse student-athletes had their first recruiting contact with a coach prior to the start of their junior year. Lacrosse had the highest rate of early recruiting when compared to the other ten NCAA sanctioned women’s sports. For field hockey and soccer, NCAA Division I coaches can contact athletes starting June 15 after an athlete’s sophomore year, including verbal offers, emails, calls, texts, and recruiting letters. These decisions affect these athlete’s futures heavily and prove to be an exciting new chapter in their lives. By: Nabil Abou EASTERN CONFERENCE WESTERN CONFERENCE By: Bell West 2022 is the year of the Tiger.
The tiger is the symbol of ambition, courage, self-confidence and a commitment to help others. By these traits alone, 2022 might as well be the year of sophomore Jordyn Dodson-Jenson. Dodson-Jenson made Glenelg history by becoming the school’s first female football player when she held the first extra point for the Gladiators against Hammond High School on Sep. 2 and has started every game since. Ambition, courage, self-confidence: check. By: Nabil Abou and Mr. Illuzzi In 1958, Bobby Darin’s “Splish Splash” topped the billboard charts, President Eisenhower signed NASA into law, and WHAM-O introduced the Hula Hoop to the world.
While obviously significant to pop culture and the world, these events might not have as much impact locally like the meaning of the game that took place 65 years ago, establishing the longest running rivalry in Howard County sports history: the Gladiators versus the Howard Lions and the battle for the Elgard Trophy. By: AJ Eyre and Ashley Ford Freshman Natalie Davis finished fourth at the MPSSAA state tournament at The Show Place Arena.
We asked Davis about her experience as a female wrestler in a male dominated sport: By: AJ Eyre The wrestling team, which capped off a stellar season with a county championship title, were represented by five male wrestlers who qualified and competed at the state championship meet March 4-5.
Senior Kyle Hansberger and junior Ethan Sotka placed second at the state tournament, while seniors Kian Payne (3rd place), Daniel Vaysman (4th place), and Jaegon Hibbits (4th place), each had strong performances. Glenelg Shield staff writer A.J. Eyre spoke to each of the five to get their thoughts about how they felt the season went:

A team out of Savannah, Ga. has been gaining traction for its interesting way of playing baseball. After many seasons with very few people in attendance the Savannah Bananas, a minor league baseball team, has been consistently selling out stadiums ever since the team changed owners in 2016.
Fans now come to watch the collegiate level baseball players who are there to play baseball. The team has been very good in the past years, winning the CPL (Coastal Plain League) championship in 2016. |
