The Special Sauce: McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce

3/26/2018

By Reagan Ahlquist

McDonald’s finally brought back the sauce fans have been waiting for due to popular demand. The famous Szechuan sauce has returned after its limited released in 1998 to promote Disney’s movie, Mulan
. And fans have been demanding for it after the hit show Rick and Morty brought it into their show.
In this show one of the main characters, Rick, obsesses over the sauce because he has not tasted it for years. Now Rick and Morty fans want to taste the same sauce that the show has obsessed over.

In response to the fans who craved the sauce, McDonald’s initially re-released the sauce on October 7th, 2017 but supplies were extremely limited and few stores across the United States had the sauce. Since the sauce was so limited people were left disappointed, but McDonald’s brought back the sauce again on February 22nd, 2018. This time with over 20 million packs of sauce for everyone to enjoy, until they eventually run out.

I visited the nearest McDonald’s and tried the Szechuan sauce myself. I had the sauce with some chicken McNuggets and fries to get a good feel for the taste of the sauce. I found the sauce to taste somewhat tart and sour and has a consistency of honey. Its texture was smooth, which was perfect for the nuggets and fries. Other Glenelg students also tried the sauce such as Senior, Aidan Sedlack, who said, “The sauce was a mix between sweet and sour sauce and soy sauce. I thought it was very good.” Sedlack was looking forward to the sauce and he was not disappointed.

Another Glenelg Senior, Jordan Taylor, also tried the sauce and mentioned that, “It was surprisingly better than I thought. It tasted more of a mix of a honey mixture and soy sauce, but had the consistency of teriyaki sauce”. It is hard to exactly pinpoint the exact taste of a new sauce like this, but it appears to be some form of soy sauce. Taylor also recommends getting the McDonald’s chicken tenders with the new sauce because he believes the crunchiness of the tenders are better for the taste.

Overall the sauce had very high expectations and lived up to them. Most new things that are hyped up as much as this sauce fail to live up to it, but the Szechuan sauce did not disappoint after months of anticipation. So try to go to the nearest McDonalds and get some before they run out because nobody knows when or if McDonald’s will release this special sauce again.
