Emily Chandler: The Color Guard Captain

5/8/2017

By Ryan Hack

Emily Chandler is a Senior at Glenelg High School, who hopes to move on to live her dream of becoming the president of a large company. Next year, Chandler will be attending either Towson University to major in business management. In order to prepare for this, she will try to get a job to keep up her work ethic over the summer. With this major, Chandler hopes that she will be able to go into hotel management before moving up in the ranks. When asked about how Glenelg prepared her for next year, Chandler said “that on a scale of one to ten, a six because I still have many questions [moving forward].” Chandler is curious about how housing and loans will work as she moves on to college. While she was at Glenelg, her favorite memories were all the band trips when they went down to Orlando, Florida. She loved this because she was “able to bond with friends, the competitions were exhilarating, and the destinations were cool.” Her favorite year of high school was her Senior year, where she had her favorite class, English with Mr. Singleton. This class made her better at writing essays, as there was on due every week.
As she worked in school, she participated in many extracurricular activities. She was in choir, orchestra, robotics, and Color Guard. Chandler joined Color Guard as a Freshman and immediately fell in love with it. She discovered her natural talent for the sport, and continued to compete throughout all of high school. During her Sophomore year, she became the youngest captain ever of the Color Guard, which helped her “understand people’s ways of learning and how to learn to adapt as every situation is different.” In their Keystone Indoor Drill Competitions, they received first place every time, and third place in all of the championships. When she enters college, she hopes to be able to continue Color Guard there too.
Throughout this entire process, her older sister Dana was able to give her honest answers about college, her father was able to help out in figuring out costs, and her mother and sister Jessica were there for moral support the entire way. Chandler says to “take many pictures throughout high school so you can decorate your dorm with memories.”
