Glenelg High School CANNOT Ball Out

​The first GHS basketball tournament, Glenelg BallOut, was set to take place on Wednesday March 20. Hosted by the Glenelg High School Class of 2021, the winners of the tournament are granted the ultimate prize of pride and bragging rights. Unfortunately, due to a lack of participation from the student body, the event was cancelled.

The basketball tournament was scheduled to occur after school from 6-9 PM. Games would have consisted of half court standard basketball rules and games would have been five on five with at least one substitute player sitting out. 2 games would have been played at the same time, and each match was going to be 15 minutes. Winning teams would continue in the bracket and losing teams would be disqualified. Teams were made up of players from all grade levels. There must be at least 6 players with 1 as a substitute, the maximum being 8 with 3 substitutes. The cost for a single player was $5. Admission to spectate the tournament would also be $5. For spectators, there would have been food and beverages available for purchase. The GHS Dance Team was scheduled as the halftime performance

According to Maggie Yin, the President of the 2021 SGA, “Glenelg BallOut is mostly just for the school community to have a great time and show their support. The added benefit is that with the money we will raise, we can add funding to the 2020 prom so the tickets won’t be as expensive and every Junior and Senior who pleases can go!” The SGA was also asking staff members for their assistance, by acting as referees during the matches and helping with the concession stand. The SGA had requested the help of parents to donate packaged foods and to assist in selling tickets for the event.


Unfortunately, the event was only able to entice 4 teams to compete in the tournament. Hoping to recruit at least 16 teams, the 2021 board decided to cancel the event. With all the exciting changes occurring involving the GHS BallOut, it was a sad predicament that due to lack of teams to play within the tournament, BallOut needed to be cancelled. “The BallOut was a great idea for a fundraising program that must have been difficult to organize and plan, so it was a shame it had to be removed.” says Ms. Currie-Scott, Library Media Specialist at Glenelg High School.


“I wanted to sign up for the Ballout, but i was really busy trying to complete by Russian Revolution project.” says Cooper Gorrey, a 10th grader at GHS. The Glenelg BallOut was a great idea, but had not taken account for Glenelg students’ colossal workload. The SGA wants to being the tournament back possibly when the workload is lighter for students.
