By Amanda Sames In a school full of 1,196 students, it is difficult to know everyone in your grade. There are 290 students in the Senior class this year, so there will be many remarkable people walking across the stage whom some people may not know. One person in particular, Gabriella Cawley, is an exceptional Senior graduating this year. Some may know Gabriella Cawley as “the girl going to Cornell,” but there is more depth to her character and accomplishments than just that fact.
It is true that Cawley is going to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in the next stage of her life. She plans to major in Human Development with a minor in Education, which includes “an interdisciplinary mix of biology, psychology, and cognitive science, focusing on how people grow and develop throughout life.” She hopes to get her Phd and perhaps become a college professor or professional researcher in biological or psychological sciences. It is obvious that Cawley has been interested in this field, as she participated in the mentorship program at GHS, working with students at Folly Quarter Middle School, studying curriculum applications and classroom methodology. Since striving for such a prestigious school, Cawley would like to thank many teachers for helping her achieve her success and prepare her for college and life, particularly Ms. Chawkat, Ms. Doermann, Ms. Ohanian, and Dr. Shepard. In college, Cawley would like to take part in service activities, dance, and other clubs she might be interested in. She also participated in dance through the high school’s dance department as well as outside of school at Studio Dans. Other extracurriculars she participated in include Key Club, Executive SGA, Gladiators on the Horizon, and Robotics. In fact, one of Cawley’s most memorable experiences in high school involve Key Club, as she was both a member and an officer. She says that “the service projects and District Conventions in Baltimore were especially fun,” and would like to give a shout out to Mrs. Doermann and the DCON crew. Through her participation in a wide variety of activities and hard academic work, Cawley has been able to receive many rewards and gain accomplishments, including the GHS Key Club Outstanding Service Award, the Capital District Key Club Distinguished Officer Award, National Merit Scholarship Commendation, the GHS Key Club Scholarship, the Glenwood Lions Club Scholarship, and the 4 County Lions Club Scholarship. Personally, she believes she has grown a lot as a person throughout high school and has become a better student. She is especially proud that she has gotten into Cornell University, obviously. In these four long years, all Seniors experience so many things and make meaningful memories, which they will leave behind when they step into the next chapter of their lives. For Cawley, she will miss living so close to her friends. She also says that “it’s a bit bittersweet, having to leave my friends and family and dog, but I am really excited to move on to this next chapter of my life.” That being said, Cawley is most looking forward to having more freedom and independence as well as meeting new people and experiencing all that Ithaca has to offer in her college career. As she leaves the familiar town of Glenelg, Cawley would like to leave behind a piece of advice she was once given: “Your friends are some of the most important people in your life so make sure you let them know you appreciate them.” She would also like to give herself some advice, which she is sure that all students will need: “Stop procrastinating!” As Cawley embarks on her journey through college, she takes with her “a sense of pride and confidence,” as she knows she has done a great deal to give back to the community and contribute to the social culture in and outside of Glenelg.
