The Perfect Promposal

3/22/2019

By Sarah Cipolla

'Tis the season for promposals! Prom is right around the corner, on April 6th, to be exact: less than one month away from the big night at the lakefront Sheraton Hotel in Columbia. Girls have been shopping for the right dress and boys have been looking for the ideal tuxedo to match their date. The night would not be complete without the right date and the perfect way to ask your date to prom.

Some Glenelg students have already been asked to prom. For example, Senior Kylie Haynie asked her date, River Hill’s Seiba Rizk, at the Chick-Fil-A in Clarksville, Maryland. Kylie Haynie came up with her idea because she “knew he had been working a lot” at Chick-Fil-A, and decided that she would ask him there. Kylie Haynie made a poster that read “Seiba, it would be my pleasure to take you to prom?” She walked into Chick-Fil-A wearing a cow onesie and asked him if he would go to prom, to which Seiba Rizk joyfully said, “Yes! Of course!” She said her date “thought I was trying to embarass him at work,” but “It ended up being perfect.”

Another Glenelg student, Senior Vito DiValentin, asked his date to prom in a very special way. He asked Senior Emma LeTellier to prom by writing her a song. Last year, Vito DiValentin missed prom because he was taking part in the Worlds Robotic Championship and never got to ask Emma LeTellier to prom. In order to make it up to her, he wrote her a song and serenaded her in front of the robotics team. The song included lines about their memories together and was incredibly thoughtful since they both love music. Emma LeTellier said she was, “Very surprised and had no idea it was happening.” What a wonderful way to be asked to prom.

For those of you who are looking for some ideas on how to ask your date, here are three simple and cheap promposals. First, you could make a cookie cake or cupcakes and write “Prom?” with frosting. Another simple way to ask your date to prom is by giving your date flowers and a handwritten note asking them to prom. The last easy way to ask your date to prom is to make your prom date a poster and write “ [Date’s name] will you go to prom with me?” These options are cheap, to the point, and can be put together in short notice.

If you want to be a little more creative, try the next few ideas. The first way you may be able to ask your date is through Starbucks. You could take your prom date out for lunch and head over to Starbucks. When you order the food or drink, you could ask the barista to write “Prom?” on the name label instead of your date’s name. When your date gets their order, they will be sure to say “yes.” Another way to ask someone with food is to ask your date with Dunkin’ Donuts. Slyly ask your date what their favorite order at Dunkin’ Donuts is and bring that along with a poster. On this poster, you can write “Donut say no to me, prom?” Try surprising them at the end of the school day!

If your date is more of a sports minded person, you can theme your promposal in such a way. For this promposal, you will need a poster, and the type of equipment your date uses in their designated sport. On the poster board, write, “[Date’s name], can I score a date with you at prom?” On the designated sportswear, you can also write “Prom” directly on them. For instance, if your date plays lacrosse, you can buy five lacrosse balls and and designate each ball to a letter and one with a question mark. Take your creation and surprise them at their next game, scrimmage, or even practice.

As the season of promposals continues, the excitement builds for the one day of the year where Seniors and Juniors come together for a fun, fancy event. Be sure to send us pictures from your promposal to be featured on the website. We hope to see you and your date at prom!
