As the school year is winding down, the anticipation for summer goes through the roof for most students. A wide variety of people partake in the classic summer activities such as going to the beach or pool, or just hanging out with friends. But what happens when you and your friends get bored of the everyday summer routine? Well here is a short list of some unique activities that will for sure make for a memorable summer day.

  1. Build a slip and slide
Simply by grabbing a few tarps, some water, and soap, you and your friends can put together a big slip and slide. To make sure the tarps do not move around on the grass, grab some landscape anchor pins to keep everything in place. Timmy Bonner, a Senior at Glenelg High School, claims that he and his friends, “set up a tarp with water and soap, and slid down a huge hill by his house. It’s a lot of fun to get together and do something that doesn’t require too much planning.” Whether you are alone or with friends, this activity is great for a hot summer day.

      2.  Build a fort or tree house
There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of work to build the perfect hangout spot for you and your friends throughout the summer. This particular activity involves a little more planning than some of the others on this list. Glenelg Sophomore, Robbie Tolbert, spoke on the magic of tree houses and says, “When I was super young, my family and I built this miniature treehouse in our backyard. Some of my best memories came from it.” Gathering necessary materials, helpful friends, and a little bit of elbow grease is required, but the outcome lasts for ages and is worth the struggle. Spend some time with friends in a nice bonding activity that you all will remember for many summers to come.

     3.  Massive water balloon fight
Who loves getting wet on a hot summer day? That’s right. Everyone! What better way to cool off and have fun than a water balloon fight? Many people have the issue of running out of water balloons in the first several minutes of a game or ditching the idea as a whole because the process of making all the balloons is too time consuming and not worth it. There are ways you can make ten balloons at once that will help create a long lasting game. Jasmine Kim, a Junior at Glenelg High School, claims that she has had, “Very fun water balloon fights with my two younger brothers, and the neighbors. We have the ‘Bunch of Balloons’, where you can make many water balloons at once. It’s very helpful and makes for a fun, fulfilling game during the summer.”

     4.  Overnight camping trip with friends
Getting out of one’s usual scenery can be a nice change during the summer. Bring some friends or even go solo on a camping trip. Wherever land is available, gather a tent and other necessary materials and spend the night in the wilderness. Molly Dustin, a Junior at Glenelg High School, says that her and her family, “Go on a camping trip every summer and it’s a fun way to bond with everyone, spend some time away from technology, and appreciate nature.” There are spots around Howard County like Ramblin Pines, in Woodbine, or Patapsco Valley State Park in Ellicott City. There are many places, small and big, that have camping spots for everyone. Taking a break from the tech savvy lives everyone lives in nowadays, can be a great refresher to any summer.

     5.  Start a lawn mowing business
Need a little extra money for summer adventures, food, gas, and everything in between? Mowing lawns for neighbors is a perfect opportunity to earn yourself some dough while still being able to enjoy the summer weather. Glenelg Sophomore Nathaniel Sawitzki has ran what he considers to be a “lawn mowing business” over the past few summers, and had nothing but positive things to say about it. He explains, “I just connect my headphones, turn on some music, and I’m all set. The time honestly seems to fly, and after a couple short hours, I’m fifty bucks richer.” With a little hard work, you could open up so many opportunities for future summer fun.
