Homecoming: Paradise Awaits!

11/16/2016

By Logan Barragan and Jessica Lawson

The Dance

Despite the chillier temperatures, Glenelg had a night in paradise for their 2016 homecoming. Guests were greeted with leis and tickets to enjoy treats. As students made their way through the hallways, they were transported to a tropical paradise with rain forests, volcanoes, and sea creatures. The main gym was abuzz with a DJ playing current hits and scenes from each class’ theme adorning the bleachers. When taking a break from dancing, students had many options as to what to do. Right outside the gym, there was a Kona Ice truck handing out cups of shaved ice in various flavors. Also outside was a video game trailer; a large truck with seats inside it that enabled many players to get their game on. If students were not into the snow-cones, they could have movie theater style popcorn or unlimited cotton candy at the end of the athletic hallway. Across from the main gym, the auxiliary gym was full of games and activities that could keep anyone happy for hours. From giant Jenga to mini golf to airbrush tattoos, the possibilities were endless. Students could make their way down to the cafeteria, where they were able to have pictures with their friends taken. It was then uploaded onto a giant twenty-five foot screen, allowing students to add doodles by using their fingers on the virtual touch screen. The only question Glenelg students were left with was how can this be topped next year?

The Game
Glenelg came out full force in the Homecoming game against Reservoir. Dressed in rain ponchos and boots, the fans braved the rain to cheer on their Gladiators and it proved to be a great game! Sophomore Wande Owens scored both of Glenelg’s touchdowns in their 17-14 victory. It was a close match and the Gladiators earned their winning touchdown in the last minutes of the game. In addition to an
exhilarating game, the half time show included stellar performances from the Cheerleaders, the Marching Unit, and the Dance Team.

The Pep Rally
The pep rally was held on Friday, October 7th during fifth and sixth periods. It kicked off with a great exhibit by the Marching Unit, Dance Companies, and Cheerleaders performing the fight song on the field. The presentation of athletes went smoothly and ended with the Allied Soccer team running through a student-made tunnel. The whole pep rally was full of competitions such as obstacle courses, three-legged races, Gladiator relays, and mummying teachers. In addition to the events, there were two surprise collaborations. First was the Varsity Football players dancing with the Cheerleaders. Not long after, Mr. Burton and Dr. Bashore came out to groove with the Dance Team. The festivities concluded with the announcement of the Homecoming Court and the results of which administrator would kiss the piglets. After a week of voting, Mr. Tomas was the lucky administrator who got to smooch the piggies!
