Thankfully, there are a lot of new movies coming out just in time for winter. Set to release in theaters on November 11th, Arrival, is the newest sci-fi drama. The inspiration for this movie comes from a short story by Ted Chiang called Story of Your Life. The movie starts off with a peek as Dr. Louise Bank’s past. Dr. Louise Banks is a linguist who is played by Amy Adams. After the flashback, the movie cuts to the present where Banks is teaching a lecture when she learns that twelve rounded spaceships have touched down each in different countries. The aliens driving the ships, who come to be called hept apods, are creatures with seven legs and a big head. Banks is then recruited by the military to work alongside of Dr. Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) in order to try to communicate with the aliens before the military is forced to resort to violence. This task proves to be more difficult than they had anticipated because the aliens’ written language consists of only dots and ink splotches. Arrival was well received by critics, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the movie an 8.5/10 and Stephanie Zacharek at Time Magazine raving, “The picture is intelligently and effectively crafted, one of those enterprises where the cinematography, sound design and score, as well as the special effects, melt into a seamless, organic whole” Overall, this movie sounds like a winner. If sci-fi isn’t your thing though, The Edge of Seventeen is the newest coming of age film. Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) has always been friends with Krista since they met on the playground when they were little. Krista stuck with Nadine through everything from Nadine’s dad dying, to her conflict with her mother. Life changes for Nadine in her Junior year when Krista starts dating Nadine’s older brother, Darius. Nadine, having always been resentful of her seemingly perfect brother, cuts the two out of her life. Nadine then gets herself caught in a sort of love triangle between her awkward classmate and the bad boy that works at Petland. The story goes on from there to tell the tail of Nadine’s hilarius high school career. Critics were pleased by this movie, with IMDb rating it at a 8.9/10, and Jon Frosch from The Hollywood Reporter stating, “Fast, full-hearted and graced with a beautifully modulated lead turn by Hailee Steinfeld, the movie takes the risk of playing it straight and sincere — and the risk pays off.” The Edge of Seventeen will be out in theaters November 18th. With these great movies to choose from, you’ll have plenty of to watch this winter season. Comments are closed.
