Art is changing. During the renaissance, most art was done on canvases and boards, and it is traditional to create art this way. In more recent years, technology has given people the chance to put their art into a film or digital medium. This has expanded creativity vastly, making way for newer, more contemporary and innovative art. Jena Ialongo, an advanced artist and student at Glenelg, believes digital and film art “allow for more creativity because you can do so many more things that traditional art can not.” At The National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C., an exhibit showcases these kinds of creations and is something worth seeing, expressing emotions and ideas that you can not reach with traditional art. Bill Viola: The Moving Portrait features work from a span of over 40 years, all on video panels. Many describe his work as innovative, and has been in the spotlight for years since it is so different from many other artists like Vik Muniz and Richard Serra. Viola’s work features the metaphysical issues about our place in the world and encourages self-reflection, especially in works like Surrender which shows two people on opposite poles, looking and diving into their reflections into the water they are waist deep in. Another popular piece in the exhibit is The Raft, which was one of the more recent works, done in 2004. It tells the story of many people from different ethnic backgrounds, all standing in one big conglomeration. At around the halfway mark (5 minutes), a torrent of water rushes out for both sides of the panel. For the rest of the portrait, the people tumble and stumble, the water’s strength pushing everyone in different directions. The Dreamers is one of the more relaxing and undisturbed works in the exhibit. It is a collection of seven panels featuring seven people of all different ages sitting still in water, the sound of the still stream echoing in the room. The concept of age and stillness is also expressed in another work in the exhibit, Four Hands, which shows four panels of hands, from left to right, young to old, the younger hands moving apart from each other, and the older hands coming together. Bill Viola’s work has various underlying meanings, and is very modern, innovative, and captivating. The Moving Portrait is an exhibit worth seeing at The National Portrait Gallery this Spring. One bystander in the exhibit calls it, “engaging with sound and movement, drawing the viewer into an experience that goes deeper than a two-dimensional portrait… bringing us closer to the human spirit.” By Jackie Lyons
Based on the iconic Archie Comics, the new show from The CW that premiered on January 26, Riverdale, has taken the teen world by storm with its seven episodes. This new murder mystery changes the theme of the Archie Comics from formerly family friendly and all inclusive to deadly and mysterious. In the town of Riverdale, everything is perfect until star football player Jason Blossom is mysteriously killed and his body found in the lake. In the wake of all the chaos, the main protagonist, Archie Andrews, and his friends, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Jughead Jones, try to find out the truth behind Jason's death and who they can and cannot trust. In my opinion, this show is an incredible tribute to some classic characters. The character development is superb, giving the characters different personalities that are more relatable to today's teenage viewers. Cole Sprouse, who plays Jughead, is so believable playing a brooding, enigmatic writer it's so easy to forget that he was once one of the biggest Disney Channel stars not too long ago. Junior Maria Salandra says, "I think it's kinda cool that he's still playing the awkward, nerdy kid but now he's better." Glenelg students like Salandra feel like they can relate to the struggles Jughead and other characters face. Unlike many comic books that have been adapted into shows like The CW’s The Flash, Riverdale is not about a superhero, but ordinary teenage life. While Riverdale may sound like another typical teen show, it really holds more. According to Junior Mayuri Albal, "It showcases high school and family life and the hardships some people face on a day to day basis. Also the characters aren't the typical stereotypes. Betty is more than just the girl next door while Cheryl isn't just the typical mean girl who lives the perfect life." Even if murder mysteries aren't your thing, it's worth giving it a shot and will leave you wondering: Who killed Jason Blossom? By Kendall Howze
Glenelg’s theater department has done it again with yet another sensational performance. To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ 87th birthday, Glenelg High School put on Seussical the Musical. In Seussical, the Cat in the Hat (Junior Jake Baker), Mayzie LaBird (Senior Alex Wood), JoJo (Lisbon Elementary School Student Lilianna Robinson), Horton the Elephant (Senior Emilio Bayarena), and other Dr. Seuss characters from various stories were all linked in the same storyline. After Horton finds a speck of dust that happens to be carrying the town of Whoville, he does his best to protect the speck and all of the people of Whoville, including an imaginative little Who named Jojo that thinks a little too outside of the box. Horton’s job isn’t easy, as everyone believes Horton is crazy for talking to a speck. Community members of all ages came to see the play. It was advertised as a family event, and many families did in fact have a nice night seeing their favorite childhood classics recreated on the Glenelg High School stage. While there were many little kids in the audience watching, there were also a few kids in the show. The child ensemble had kids from local elementary schools as members of the town of Whoville. Most of the child ensemble members may have been familiar if you saw Glenelg’s 2016 spring musical, Music Man. As always, according to Sophomore Madie Calhoun, “They were adorable.” Lilianna Robinson is another returning elementary school actress from last year’s Music Man. Her role of Amaryllis was small but played very well by her as she acted with her older brother Ray Robinson, a 2016 Glenelg graduate. This year she stepped up to play the large role of JoJo, one of the main characters of Seussical. She sang a wonderful solo “It’s Possible,” a couple duets with Horton, and many songs with the ensemble. Hopefully we will be seeing more of her in the future. Many of the actors in Seussical are excited to be a part of the next play. The seniors, however, have just been in their last play at Glenelg as a student. This final performance was bittersweet for Senior Michael Leard, who has been involved in the theater program all of his high school career. In Seussical, he played one of the Wickersham brothers. When asked about how he felt knowing he was about to star in his last performance, Leard said, “It was a very sad moment for the Seniors of the theater department, however it is also something I will remember for a lifetime.” As phenomenal as the main characters were, the ensemble was just as spectacular. Their energy level was high and kept the audience engaged. The wacky costumes of the residents of Whoville really brought together the setting and depicted the cartoon characters just as Dr. Seuss would have intended. April Fools’ Day is a lighthearted day filled with jokes and laughter that are mostly innocent. However, some of the more daring participants choose to pull pranks that essentially make the holiday one to remember. Use this list to help you pull an epic prank to be talked about for years to come! Air Horn Fright: This perfect prank is extremely easy to put together, but be warned - it will cause your victim to be on edge for up to days after you pull it! All you need to do is buy an air horn (or multiple air horns, if you’re feeling extra devious) that is activated by a button at the very top. They are very easy to find, and searching on popular all-inventory websites such as Amazon should provide you with a large selection. Once you have it, tape the horn to a section of wall directly behind a door of choice and give your friend a reason to barge through it. The look on their face when it goes off will be something you’ll never forget! Caramel Onions: Trick your friends and family into biting into a delicious caramel “apple.” Only you will know that they are actually about to eat a raw onion. All you need for this prank are onions, skewers and caramel. The caramel can be store bought or made at home with butter and brown sugar. If you are making it, place two sticks of butter and one cup of brown sugar in a pot on the stove. Heat until it darkens and looks like caramel (it will have a sweet aroma as well). You can double or triple the recipe depending on how many onions you want to dip. Next, stick a skewer in the onion and completely cover it in caramel. Place them on parchment paper and let the caramel harden in the fridge. Then, leave them on the counter and wait for your victim to take a bite. A Sour Surprise: Similar to the Caramel Onion prank, this insanely disgusting prank will make your friends never want to eat donuts again. All you need to do is buy a box of any creme-filled donuts (such as jelly filled or boston creme) and puncture a small hole in each. Then use a pipette to suck everything out, and squeeze in the mayonnaise with a piping bag. Close up the box and place it where you know your friends will find it, and they will be running to the nearest sink or water fountain to clean out their mouths faster than a speeding bullet! Sophomore Jack McSally said that, “After my mom bought a box of donuts for my sister and her friends I knew this was my chance for a laugh. I filled half of them with mayonnaise and half with hot sauce. Their reactions were priceless.” Tip: If you don’t have any mayonnaise, you can use any squeezable substance; just make sure you’ll be able to fit it into the piping bag! The Invisible Wall: This prank takes little effort, but always has hilarious results. Glenelg Sophomore Annie Hoang said, “I did this prank on my friend last year. It only took two minutes to set up and it was really funny to watch!” All you need is clear packing tape and a doorway. To start, place strips of the packing tape horizontally across a doorway. You can do as little, or as much as you would like. Next, come up with a reason to make your victim run through the doorway with the tape. Get your camera ready and prepare to laugh as the victim runs through the tape and gets in a sticky mess. The start of March means the kickoff of the highly anticipated Paris Fashion Week 2017. Consisting of recognizable names as well as less notable ones, the Ready To Wear PFW did not disappoint the industry. With audiences from across the globe, brands such as Reem Acra, Balenciaga, Vetements, and Chanel brought their A-game with clothes illustrated by their creative minds hailed as the epitome of designers. Many teenagers and adults look to these yearly RTW shows for inspiration in the coming seasons, such as Natalie Proviano, a Junior at Glenelg who states that, “I enjoy following up on fashion weeks, mostly because I enjoy seeing new unique styles presented at them… I get lots of ideas as to how I can manipulate my wardrobe to imitate new styles”. Although each show released uniquely breathtaking looks, there was a significant pattern in the trends displayed throughout the leading labels. After a lengthy analysis of all the big-name designers and some unknowns, here are the most fashionable street trends to look out for this Fall 2017. Trench Coats Maybe this term brings up memories of chic business CEOs, or maybe it screams of the beloved movie, The Breakfast Club. Whatever your outlook on this clothing style, its undeniable rise is unrivaled. Seen in shows ranging from Aalto, Givenchy, Hermès, Miu Miu, Ellery, and Stella McCartney, trench coats are a fixed staple for every wardrobe this coming autumn. These versatile overcoats can be worn with dresses, suits, sweatpants, or crisp blouses to fit anyone’s daily style necessities. While Ellery opted for masculine, grey coats, Hermès showcased sunny yellow, white, and navy styles. If you allow only one impulse buy this year, make it a boyish trench coat made perfect for long city strides. High Necklines Whether it be turtlenecks or high ruffled collars, these necklines represent a crisp, professional look many people strive to attain. Also providing warmth for the chilling autumnal air, this trend brings about a breeze of haute couture for any fashion-savvy person to achieve easily. Balmain ensures the prominence of this style through utilizing halter tops, chunky sweater necks, and dark fabrics reminiscent of the popular trend of chokers. Over this past fall, high necklines were incredibly popular, especially among teenagers such as Megan Lydon, a Sophomore who remarks “it [the trend] offers a more conservative and sleek look… I think the reason for it [being] so popular was because it’s a unique look and different from past seasons”. Without a doubt, this fashion statement is capable of transforming any outfit from ordinary to cosmopolitan, and of revamping any person’s closet to a cutting-edge, modernized look. Fur Featured on Elie Saab’s runway as vivid purple and blue bird-like capes, faux fur seems to be a fiery trend that mimics all sorts of enchanting wildlife. After a long time of cheetah and leopard print reigning the fashion world, a new, tropical aura has been brought about. Certainly craved by the wealthy and fashion-forward at one time, fur still remains prominent among designers. Rodarte showcased chic black and white fur, reminding the fashion community that simplistic colors will always be in style. Nowadays, faux fur allows for a more attainable, affordable, and animal-minded take on this runway trend, which is sure to make waves on streets. Leather & Velvet Both of these materials were extremely prevalent in various shows such as Christian Dior, Balmain, Akris, and Saint Laurent. Dark and stern, these trends can be paired with feminine blouses, jeans, or band tees to give any outfit power. Although these daring fabrics may scare people away out of unfamiliarity, give black leather pants or navy blue velvet jackets a chance to surprise you. Capes Given way through its rise in 2016, capes have come to be a striking statement of strength and empowerment. With their sharp shoulders and lengthy trains, capes are evolving into the more feminine blazer seen on the likes of model Chrissy Teigan. Johanna Ortiz, a rising designer, works to introduce this clothing trend into her repertoire, through a sophisticated, plaid piece. Other labels, such as Aalto and Louis Vuitton, produced clothing with cape-esque shoulders or small capes that give a gentle nod to this attractive style that anyone can pull-off. You’ve probably noticed the recurring superhero TV shows and movies that continuously pop up in Hollywood, but the question remains of which are worthwhile, and which are duds. The Flash, a CW TV series released in 2014, has been available to stream on Netflix since October 4, 2016, resulting in all super fans and newcomers to stare wide-eyed at a screen for hours on end. With an Instagram following of 2.3 million, it has been almost impossible to avoid hearing about this prevalent show. I myself have not been an avid devotee of these types of television, but many had raved about The Flash so I decided to give it a try. Thus, my watching frenzy began through Netflix, on a dreary 10 AM Saturday morning. The Flash is based off of the comic books on the superhero, The Flash-- a speedster who gained his powers from an explosion of a certain doctor’s particle accelerator. The Flash quickly harnesses his lightening-fast speed, encountering and fighting evil metahumans on a daily basis. With his team of scientifically talented experts, The Flash (or Barry Allen as he is known to most of the world) defeats and captures each powerful villain invading Central City. But, as most viewers are able to suspect by the end of the first episode, there is an underlying and catastrophic storyline involving Dr. Wells and Barry Allen-- one in which Barry’s closest confidante and savior from death, Dr. Wells, may not be who he says he is. Just by the storyline, The Flash captured my attention (and also since I heard Robbie Amell was in the show). The first episode hooked me immediately, and lead to a succession of four more episodes throughout the day. Coupled with the outrageous events that occur in this series, there are unbelievable special effects of various sorts, such as supernatural lightning, super speed, and a tornado created by a weather-controlling metahuman. I quickly became entranced by this whimsical yet realistic show, and through every fight, death, or kiss, I fell in love with the characters all over again. I sincerely doubt that anyone else could portray Barry Allen AKA The Flash as powerfully and emotionally potent as the true superhero, Grant Gustin. If there were to be any faults, I would point towards the disconcerting moments in which Candice Patton’s character, Iris West, wears two different pairs of “fashionable” joggers/sweatpants in one episode. May God have mercy. Anyways, other than that unfortunate instance, The Flash is filled with impressive, lively episodes that never cease to open up the viewer’s imagination to the impossible, that are also grounded to the true message: love and family. Overall, if only to give your mind a break from the repetitive activities of life and work, watch The Flash and get excited to see heartthrob Barry Allen battle metahumans and evil villains from the future for an hour every Tuesday night. This winter, Theodore Melfi’s Hidden Figures came to theaters and captured the triumph of three African-American women, Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, as they fought for civil and female rights in 1960s Virginia. The movie begins with the three mathematicians working in the negro computer department at NASA, until Johnson and Jackson are given special assignments. Throughout the movie, Jackson works towards becoming an engineer. However, in order to become an engineer, she needs to take a class at an all white school. Johnson works in a room full of mostly male, caucasian mathematicians trying to build a shuttle to send into space. Meanwhile, Vaughan fights for the title of supervisor of the computer department. She has all the responsibility of the supervisor, but without the pay. These three women will go on to conquer each of these challenges caused by both racism and sexism. Overall, this is movie very inspiring and enlightening regarding the struggles that not only blacks had to face in the working world of the 1960s, but women as well. Each actor captured the struggle of this specific time period. Hidden Figures takes on a different version of the African American struggle that has not been captured much in recent films. It focuses on the sexism from white males and occasionally black males that is often overlooked. Junior Tyler Hebron shared that she thought the movie “took on a new perspective,” mainly in terms of the insight it gave about African Americans working at NASA in the 60s. This take on their struggle is unique in comparison to the most recently made films about black life in the 1960s. Many do not focus on the struggle it is to not only be black in a racist, segregated U.S., but a black woman. Many found the movie to be inspiring. The movie reached people that not only experienced the prejudice and challenges of the 60s, but spoke to people of many ages. Junior Imani Nokuri said the movie “shows that no matter where you come from, who you are, or how people treat you, if you relentlessly work at something you’re passionate about, you will succeed above everyone else-- regardless of any setbacks.” Nokuri’s words genuinely embody the overall message that Hidden Figures wanted its viewers to understand. The ravishing glamor, the gleaming awards, and the glistening spotlight brings together the event we have all been anticipating: The Oscars. Also known as the Academy Awards, The Oscars bring our favorite actors, actresses, and films into one show. This year’s host is Jimmy Kimmel, and he reveals not only who simply grabbed the hearts of the voters, but also which films touched Americans throughout the entire country. Here are the nominees that we believe are most expected to make an outburst in the top twelve categories. The thrilling and eccentric movie La La Land, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, was nominated for best picture this year, and it screens an upcoming actress and pianist who go through manifold struggles in order to accomplish their desires. La La Land’s scenery is filled with rich hues throughout; for instance, the sky in it was painted royal blue as the two actors experienced a blossoming romance. The movie also highlighted dramatic scenes with vibrant or theatrical backgrounds and incorporated covers which create a sense of liveliness. In contrast to this film, the runner up (or next best selection) is the thrilling and historically based movie Hacksaw Ridge. Based on true events, Hacksaw Ridge tells the story about a man named Desmond Doss (played by Andrew Garfield) who enters a war, but never lays one finger on a gun. Instead, he risks his life to help his fellow army men and others who were injured. The two frontrunners for best actor are Denzel Washington and Andrew Garfield. Andrew Garfield delivers an exhilarating performance in Hacksaw Ridge, as he plays a pacifist who saves lives on the battlefield. He demonstrates the suffrage of being a medic in an alarming war, but also triumphs over the dangers that could have damaged his home life and the surrounding men around him. On the other hand, Denzel Washington is up for his third Grammy Award (although it is his eighth Academy Award nomination). Washington played Troy Maxson in Fences, who was a father that felt so hostile towards his past life that he tore his home life apart. As Washington displays this character, he creates an atmosphere that brings people to realize the importance of family. The number one nominee for Best Actress is Emma Stone. She brings excitement and joy to the table while playing Mia, an aspiring actress in La La Land. Throughout her role, she shows the ongoing trials it takes for an artist to make a debut into the music career. Based on the original 1967 film, The Jungle Book has been most expected to win the Best Visual Effects award at the Oscars. Although contenders such as Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have received applause for their stunning optical effects, The Jungle Book has a large advantage in this category because of its interactive CGI wild animals that provide a jungle setting. With two nominees for Best Original Song, La La Land’s composer Justin Hurwitz is expected to have dominance in this category. However, Hurwitz will be “competing with heavy hitters” says Elias Leight, a reporter from the Rolling Stone. Leight also discusses that “How Far I’ll Go,” from Moana, “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story, and “Can’t Stop The Feeling” from Trolls are tough competitors. With cosmetics being a major factor on how to bring a movie to life, makeup and hairstyling takes its own award at the Oscars. With A Man Called Ove, Suicide Squad, and Star Trek Beyond running up to take home the award, it is hard to predict who the victor will be. Carson Dillard, a Sophomore at Glenelg, has confidence that Star Trek Beyond will win this category because “the characters look so alike to the ones from the original movie, which shows how talented the makeup designers for this specific movie [are].” Although there are only three nominees, it is still going to be hard to tell who will win this Oscar. Makeup and hairstyling are not the only things that bring to life the characters in movies; costumes are also extremely important. For example, nominee Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has received credit from many viewers for having interesting concepts and designs that help to draw multiple fans in. However, Michael Lewis, a Sophomore at Glenelg, thinks differently. Lewis believes that another nominee, Allied, should win Best Costume Design because of how detailed its costumes are compared “to the time setting of the film” and because they are geared “towards the World War 2 era.” The other nominees for the Best Costume Design award are Florence Foster Jenkins, Jackie, and La La Land. Collider, an online article website, asserts how the Best Adapted Screenplay category “[isn’t] free from controversy” and is also “now the heavy favourite” of viewers. With minor disagreement, the expected winner is to be Moonlight directed by Barry Jenkins. Additionally, viewers must also remember that there is still fierce competition from the nominees Arrival, Fences, Hidden Figures, and Lion. Walt Disney Animation Studios will possibly add onto the ten Academy Awards that they have claimed in the past for Best Animated Feature, as the company has created two nominees this year: Moana and Zootopia. It will be very close, because Zootopia has had a large outbreak throughout 2016, but Moana (a more recent animation) has received endless praise. Also, Moana has been appreciated for “its non-traditional female protagonist, diversity in storytelling, and an amazing songbook”, but Zootopia is “critically acclaimed, socially-conscious and one of the top-grossing films of the year”, says an online writer for Tylt. Although one of these two are highly anticipated to take home the title of Best Animated Feature, their competitors include Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, and The Red Turtle. Despite the fact there are a variety of categories that still have no clear winners, we can only hope that our favorite actors and actresses will take home their own Oscar this year at the 89th Academy Awards. Merriweather Post Pavilion is one of the closest concert venues to the Glenelg area, smack in between Washington DC and Baltimore. For every event, thousands of people line up at the gate, eager to see the famous performances by their favorite artists. Legends such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin have performed there. Artists ranging from Wiz Khalifa to Kenny Chesney have sung there. Festivals such as Sweet Life and Sunday in the Country have gathered there. This Merriweather stage, walked by several celebrities, attracts numerous kids from Glenelg High School. In fact, many Glenelg graduates walk the same stage to receive their diploma. In case you are one of those regular concert goers, or maybe you’re someone looking to have one extravagant night out, we have a line up of many performers that will be attending this year. Dierks Bentley, May 19: Country star Dierks Bentley will be coming to Merriweather for his first time. This 41 year old artist sings the top favorites “Different for Girls”, “Drunk on a Plane”, and “Somewhere on a Beach”. Though an uprising star, he is the first concert of the season that many students are planning to attend. The Chainsmokers, May 26: The Chainsmokers will be a change of scenery from the usual country concerts that appear at Merriweather. Their famous hits include “Closer”, “Roses”, “Don’t Let Me Down”, “Paris”, and several others. Junior, Maggie Johnson, says that this concert will be, “good to have a different environment at Merriweather. I will be able to get into the music and dance to songs that were big over the past year.” Many will remember their old jam, “#SELFIE”, that made its debut in 2015. John Legend, June 20: John Legend, singer and songwriter, will be joining us early on this summer. Whether you are going with friends, family, or a significant other, this will have a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. With many awards for his albums, some highly anticipated songs will include, “All of Me”, “Love Me Now,” “Ordinary People” and “Glory.” Luke Bryan, June 25: This concert, not even on sale yet, is already set to be a very crowded one and will most likely sell out. He is a very popular country artist that sings “Huntin’ Fishin’ and Lovin’ Everyday”, “Kick the Dust Up”, “Crash My Party”, “Country Girl”, “That’s My Kinda Night”, and several more that any country fan would recognize. Lady Antebellum, August 13: Another popular country band is coming down to Maryland this concert season. This friendly, upbeat atmosphere will surely take in a large crowd as well. Their music includes “Need you Now”, “Downtown”, and “Bartender”Although these songs aren’t all that new, they are very well known. With these few concerts set in stone, tickets and outfits will soon be bought, and the night is guaranteed to be entertaining. Lawn ticket prices are usually around $60 for a concert and $70 for a festival. Junior and regular concert goer, Vincent Gurfolino, said that this year, “I am most excited for Dierks Bentley because it is on my birthday and I really admire his music. I like to listen to his music, ‘Somewhere on a Beach’.” If you think you would enjoy listening to your favorite tracks live all night while you’re surrounded by friends, Merriweather is the place to be. By Anna Lawson Mug cakes are a perfect fix for those late night cravings. According to Sophomore Lucy Loazer, “Mug cakes are so simple and quick to make! I love chocolate, so my favorite is the molten chocolate cake.” All of these cakes and cookies use common household ingredients, and are ready to eat in less than five minutes. Erin Chizmadia said, “I couldn’t believe how good they turned out. I was a bit skeptical at first, because who thinks to cook a cake or cookie in the microwave?
