After nine years of waiting, nine years away from the town of Stars Hollow, “Gilmore Girls” fans were graced with a familiar voice, Lorelai Gilmore, during the opening credits of the highly anticipated Gilmore Girls revival. It began with the first words ever spoken in the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls as Lorelai entered Luke’s Diner saying, “Please, Luke, please, please, please.” “How many cups of coffee have you had this morning?” echoed Luke Danes. Fans were immediately engaged and brought right back into Stars Hollow. The opening credits continued to play the most memorable quotes from the show. This lead right into the opening scene where fans were finally reunited with the stars of the show, Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, together at last. The revival included four episodes titled “Winter,” “Spring,” “Summer,” and “Fall,” each taking place in the corresponding season. The episode titles reference the chorus of the song “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King, the singer and writer of the show’s theme song, “Where You Lead.” While this may seem like an underwhelming amount of episodes for another season of the show, each episode is ninety minutes long, roughly twice as long as episodes from the show’s original seven seasons. Fans were yet again able to catch up with the cast of the show when a surprising amount of the members were available for filming. Over thirty members returned, only leaving eight out of the new season. Their absence, however, did not leave the cast members short of any actors. Twenty-six guest stars appeared on the show in their place. Many actors from singer and songwriter Carole King to Tony Award winning Christian Borle. Many actors were eager to participate. With all of the guests stars and drama in the revival, it would have been easy for the writer of the show, Amy Sherman-Palladino, to let the unanswered questions from the original series remain unanswered. Palladino, however, did a great job tying up loose ends. Questions like “What happens to Rory’s love life?” “Do Luke and Lorelai ever get married?” “What happens to Jess?” are all answered. If you haven't seen the revival yet, let me you tell you, you won't be disappointed. It won't take long for you to get wrapped up in the drama and lost in the town of Stars Hollow.

The New Year has officially begun, and with it comes fresh, cutting-edge clothes and styles that will reign what the world sees as trendy. The first major fashion show of 2017 was over the weekend of January 6-9 in London, England, releasing all the new menswear for Autumn/Winter of 2017. Designers, both hardened in experience or uprising in the fashion world, gathered to display their collections and sell their brand. One stunning show presented on Saturday, January 7 was constructed by the designer and brand, Oliver Spencer. After being established in 2002, Oliver Spencer grew to become an internationally-known brand, making sophisticated, modern clothes casual enough for the everyday man. Each garment designed by Oliver Spencer utilizes the significant details in mundane menswear, only then to fabricate those styles into uniquely eclectic and blasé ones. The label’s latest runway show did not disappoint on their distinctively classic image, so here’s the low-down on Oliver Spencer’s newest collection. The show was a compilation of eclectic, old-time English style turned chic and contemporary. Whether one looks for clothes that could transition from night to day, business to casual, striking to neutral, Oliver Spencer’s line carried all of these ideals. Their show was the epitome of the normal guy on the street catching the eyes of a regular girl, just through wearing breathtaking, distinctive clothes. Oliver Spencer’s fashion show embodied not only whimsicality, but diversity. Each model looked unique, either through figure, facial structure, race, or most of all, age. While some models looked to be in their early 20s, others were in their 50s or 60s. This blatant age gap goes to prove fashion doesn’t wane with age, and that Oliver Spencer is able to display this everlasting style through all-around, everyday inspiration. Oliver Spencer takes much of his inspiration from English architecture, applying crisp cuts and blatant color-blocking. The major color scheme of his newest clothing line is composed of burgundy, stark grays and dark blues, peach, burnt orange, and woodsy browns; all of which create an inherent winter aesthetic apparent to even the most fashion-fatigued people. As far as designs and materials go, there was no shortage of twill, plaid, velvet, stripes, or fur-lined collars, which all contributed to the fabrication of a “uniquely British take on relaxed style” (GQ Magazine) which Oliver Spencer is known for. These trends may also be a signal as to what will come in this fashion New Year. Will menswear rise through the styles of both genders? Will Oliver Spencer’s contemporary, yet timeless English theme transfer over into the daily wardrobes of modern men? Only time will tell what will truly come of 2017’s fashion and trends, but it can confidently be said that Oliver Spencer’s collection will ignite a newfound style in men and women alike of all ages. After all, as stated by the genius designer himself, “For me, Oliver Spencer is about being yourself while being smart, being distinctive, being comfortable. I want to make clothes that you can adopt and inhabit. Clothes you can live in, clothes you can do things in”. In conclusion, I’d say this New Fashion Year has begun with a stylish start thanks to Oliver Spencer’s new striking collection. By Sam Larson
On December 16th, the critically acclaimed indie musician Michael Angelakos released a Christmas album. Some may be familiar with his band Passion Pit, which has been around since 2008, and has had a few well known hits. Angelakos’s music is usually known as ‘indie electronica’, however Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields, takes a different path from his usual music style. The album was released alongside a forty five minute long music video that features the whole album chronologically. Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields, strays from your typical cheesy christmas tunes, however still carries the traditional Christmas spirit within each song. The album definitely is unique, and stands apart from most christmas music. Singles like ‘Evergreen’ and ‘Permission to Audition’ are cheery, and both accompanied by bells and Angelakos’s airy vocals. Singles like ‘Meet Me at Daphne’s’ and ‘Answer Me, Harry’ are mainly instrumental with feathery harps and delicate pianos. In many indie albums, there is a song towards the middle that acts almost like a break in the monotony. Sometimes, the song catches you off guard like Glass Animals’ single ‘Premade Sandwiches’, or sometimes it provide a certain missing aspect of the album, like Foster The People’s ‘The Angelic Welcome of Mr. Jones’. In Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields, that song is ‘O Holy Night’. It features voices, distorted by radio static, that quickly becomes a hushed lullaby-like song with an angelic choir and light piano. Quickly, the quiet tune is overtaken by a foreboding rumbling that eventually ends the whole track, leaving the listener almost unsettled. ‘O Holy Night’, is short, only a minute long, but it adds a haunting aspect to the album that it originally lacked- and it supports the WWII set music video the coincides with the album. In the video, ‘O Holy Night’ is the moment where hope glimmers though the characters’ situation. Sure, Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields, has tracks that are cheery and festive, but it also carries a few singles that make you want to curl up by the fire and sip a mug of hot cocoa. ‘Footprints in the Snow’, ‘Stained Glass Windows’, ‘December To Remember, and ‘Weather the Storm’ are all songs that make you want to slow down, and truly indulge yourself in the Christmas spirit. Each of these songs vary enough the set themselves apart from one another, but they all hold the common, soothing chill that gives them a quiet vibe. Normally, Christmas music doesn't exactly make you want to cuddle up to the fireplace, but Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields sure can have that effect. The true beauty of the album, is how it manages to take all these different themes, mash them into one record, and still turn out strong. You can surely see Angelakos’s genius in how he managed to capture indie, Christmas, orchestra, and even a 1940’s vibe into one album without creating a chaotic mess. Each song blends perfectly into one another, and each song stands strong on it’s own. I’ve been listening to Angelakos’s music since I was ten years old. I’ve pored over all of Passion Pit, and sought out all Angelakos’s unreleased music. It’s interesting to hear this side of his creations- for normally it reflects a manic feel of sharp synths and high vocals. Merry Christmas, Mr Fields, shows another face to Angelakos’s music. Sure, Passion Pit has happy-go-lucky tracks like ‘All I Want’ and ‘Lifted Up (1985)’, but Merry Christmas, Mr. Fields has a wholesome side to it that appeals to the general public. The album’s “christmas cheer” is attractive, and I feel sure that with time, the album will get the publicity it deserves. By Bethany Stewart

As we transition into the chilly, winter weather, it is necessary that we change our clothing as well. The winter season is normally about trying to keep ourselves warm, yet still look fashionable all bundled in different layers of clothing. What you wear depicts a statement about yourself, and with the right amount of accessories to your outfits, the winter season provides a way to express your style throughout the frosty and snowy weather. Sweaters are go to for the winter season. With different styles from long and large oversized tops to cardigan sweaters with the perfect fit, this outfit choice is not only easy and simple, but it is also appealing and winsome. Irina Collins, a Glenelg Sophomore, recommends to stick with colors close to “burgundy, olive green, light pink, white, light gray, or black,” for winter. Another popular trend to wear over top of sweaters or casual tops are infinity scarfs. Abbey Rianhard, a Sophomore at Glenelg, says an ideal outfit idea could be an “infinity scarf with a long sleeve dress.” Rianhard also recommended to stick to colors close to gray or white. Another trend in the winter are black or white vests. These especially add to your outfit and look great over sweaters, sweatshirts, and flannels. When pairing for your winter outfit, use clothing items that are simple. A popular pairing for winter clothes are black leggings. Not only are they comfortable, but they are simple and cute. Jeans are also a popular go to with both teenage boys and girls. Ripped or not, blue jeans are a staple in your wardrobe. Lastly, you also want to add footwear to your adorable outfit. Alice Yoon, a Glenelg Sophomore, advises teenagers and adult women to wear “high brown leather boots with knee high socks.” Yoon also advised that if you do not have these boots, then to try and wear white converse, since they are a popular trend this past year. As the seasons are changing, we also need to adapt to a different sense of style and now it is time to get prepared for colder, snowy days and adorable winter fashion. You will be blazing through the snow in cute winter clothes. By Anna Lawson

The annual Golden Globes award was held this year on January 8th. This year made the 74th award ceremony. Jimmy Fallon hosted the show in Beverly Hills. The Golden Globes are awarded to actors from both film and television. With celebrity hosts and announcers, the show is always hilarious to watch. Here are the five most memorable moments of the 74th annual Golden Globes. 1) La La Land inspired opening: The opening to the 2017 Golden Globes was like no other. In honor of the multiple award winning movie La La Land, the opening was a spoof of the opening number in the movie. Jimmy Fallon sang his way through the red carpet with cameos of many other actors in the award ceremony. Perhaps the funniest moment was Fallon sitting down at a piano to play La La Land’s theme “City of Stars,” humorously wearing clip in bangs that Justin Timberlake rips off when he enters the scene. The opening reflected the rest of the award ceremony’s humorous nature, starting it off with a bang. 2) Jimmy Fallon’s teleprompter fail: After the opening musical number, Jimmy Fallon was scheduled to deliver his opening monologue to kick off the show. Everything would have gone great, but, as with many other live filmed shows, there were a few technical difficulties. Fallon’s speech was supposed to be tele prompted. Only a few seconds into his speech after welcoming everyone to the Golden Globes, Fallon says, “Already the teleprompter down, so this is a great way to start the show.” Clearly the show did not begin the way it had planned. Luckily, Fallon is a great enough performer and speaker to be quick on his feet and improvise the opening. 3) Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig presenting the Best Animated Feature award: Comedic actors from the upcoming movie Despicable Me 3, gave the award for Best Animated Feature. The actors joked with surprisingly dark anecdotes about the first time they watched an animated movie. Carell shared that his first animated movie was Fantasia, raving about the plot, and said that after he left the theater, he saw his mother standing in the lobby. Carrell then looks at the audience and says, “That was the day she told my dad she wanted a divorce.” Carell then removed his glasses to wipe fake tears out of his eyes, sending the audience roaring with laughter. Carell and Wiig both pause, straight-faced. Wiig follows with the story of the first animated movie she saw. Earlier in the day, three of her dogs had been put down, so her grandfather took her to see Bambi to take her mind off of things. Unfortunately, Bambi’s mother was shot. This was also apparently the last day she saw her grandfather. Their deadpan humor continued to send the audience into an uproar. 4) Ryan Gosling’s acceptance speech for best actor: After his stunning appearance in La La Land, Ryan Gosling accepted the award for best actor. His speech began with a joke about him being mistaken for Ryan Reynolds, opening with his classic humor the audience was expecting. It quickly took a heartfelt and touching turn as Gosling dedicated the award to his costar Emma Stone and his director Damien Chazelle, offering to chop it into three pieces. He then jokes, “I don’t really want to do that because... who would get what piece? No one wants the bottom, and we’d fight over the top. It could tear us apart.” Gosling soon thanks his wife, Eva Mendez, lovingly mentioning that she stayed home with their daughter while Gosling filmed La La Land, and she simultaneously helped her brother who was battling cancer. On his last note, leaving the audience touched, Gosling says, “Sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you. And if I may I’d like to dedicate this to the memory of [Eva’s] brother, Juan Carlos Mendez.” Gosling’s beautiful speech has left the internet with melted hearts. 5) The Tribute to Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds: The loss of beloved actors Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds made for a devastating end to 2016. The Golden Globes recognized the two with a montage of clips from their movies over the years. Scenes from When Harry Met Sally, Star Wars, singing in the Rain, and other movies were played with a clip of the two singing “You Made Me Love You” in the background. The tribute was beautiful and heartwarming. By Olivia Kavadias
A subscription box… The thought fills the air. Maybe that’s what I need. The tired, same old beat-up makeup products sit on the table in between you and the mirror. The price tags, half-covered in product, the expensive number printed on them. Soon, the answer is clear- You need a monthly makeup delivery service. IPSY and Birchbox are the two of the most popular makeup subscription boxes in the United States. They each deliver a package at the beginning of the month, which is filled with makeup samples, customized for your personal preferences and skin type. Every box or bag comes complete with five products to try for ten dollars a month, and if liked, the customer is able to buy the product online. But the question remains of which service should be bought? Which is better for you? Birchbox or IPSY? Birchbox lets you explore makeup, distributing samples of unpopular, but high-end brands. For a person who has shelves full of makeup sitting at their house, but they want to try out new styles, Birchbox is probably the better choice. Also, if the customer likes to explore and experiment with makeup, Birchbox gives a wide variety of products to try and use, making it easy to go out and find the full size product if enjoyed, or throw it out without wasting a lot of money and product. This is a plus if the buyer is picky with makeup, and aids in the problem of makeup never looking the way it does in stores- a very relatable issue. While half of makeup subscription box consumers purchase Birchbox, the other half are sworn to IPSY. IPSY gives out mainly full size products rather than sample size, which is rare in Birchbox. But not all of this merchandise is high end- in fact, some can be found at the drugstore. Rather than arriving in an attractive box like Birchbox, IPSY comes in a decorated bag and is better for those who prefer minimal time makeup routines, and maybe not as advanced. Since most of the makeup you get with IPSY is full sized, you don’t need to go out and purchase another full sized product. Also, if a customer doesn’t have much makeup or a variety of products to use, IPSY products will last longer than Birchbox due to the larger sizes. The last factor to consider is lifestyle. Are most nights spent at home, hanging out with friends, or going out to a dinner and a movie? Every customer should think about what will most suit them and their daily life. If you go out more, maybe you would prefer more options to pair with an outfit at every event. Think about what you would use most, more reliable makeup or new and exciting looks to try. If you prefer to have a more consistent schedule and use more reliable makeup, maybe you would rather have one bag of bigger products to get more uses out of. After going over this final consideration, you’ll be ready to hit the purchase button on the website you have chosen to use. By Jackie Lyons
In Damien Chazelle’s new movie, “La La Land”, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone shine as a musician and an actress trying to make it in Hollywood. I thought this movie was excellent. Thanks to the amazing script written by Chazelle himself, the dialogue was engaging and easy to keep up with. Not only was it a great film, it was a great musical. Gosling and Stone’s voices blended together, creating a memorable soundtrack. Waitress Mia(Stone), is an aspiring actress who can't seem to make it big in the industry. She eventually meets Sebastian(Gosling), a snarky jazz musician who is trying to bring back jazz to a world full of millennials. They soon set off on a whirlwind adventure of love, dancing, and especially, music. In my opinion, the best aspect of La La Land was how it was a musical and not just a straight film. The full blown song and dance routines were reminiscent to those in classic musicals such as West Side Story and Singing in the Rain. Hearing Gosling’s piano playing and singing ability made me wonder where he would be if he accepted the offer to become a Backstreet Boy. When The Backstreet Boys were first forming, Gosling was very good friends with the boy band’s AJ McLean, who ended up offering him a role in his new band. He declined and chose to focus on his acting career. But hearing him sing in his new movie was really eye opening to what could have been. The worst aspect in my opinion was John Legend. His presence seemed to take the “magic” away. Even though Gosling and Stone are familiar faces, they're talented actors who can create a whole new personality through their acting. Legend on the other hand, isn't. He's a musician. He basically played himself. Each dance scene was accompanied by beautiful cinematography. For example, the most memorable dance break between Gosling and Stone had them soaring up to the stars. It was like they were flying. As a whole, this musical was breathtaking. The visual effects were stunning. Anybody who likes classic musicals would love this movie. And of course, so would Ryan Gosling fans. By Sayo Jolayemi
