By Susanna Park On Friday, February 21st 2020, Glenelg High School’s GBC (Glenelg Broadway Connection) theater production presented an astounding performance of the entertaining and popular movie, Shrek. Shrek is an action/fantasy movie about an Ogre falling in love with a princess where they embark many adventures and experience many obstacles throughout their lives. Led by our theater advisor Ms. Sharp, Glenelg’s GBC program is a peer and special needs theater club where students are partnered with special needs students in Glenelg. The students help the special needs students learn the music, acting, and the dances for the production and rehearse for a show that they perform once a year. The GBC show presents one performance during school hours and one performance for parents and the public at night. A lot of Glenelg’s theater students love to take the opportunity to participate in the GBC production. Cara Kishter, a Junior at Glenelg High School claims, “I love theatre and performing, and love working with our special needs peers in and outside of a classroom environment. In GBC, I get to do both. It’s really awesome to get to see our special needs students gain confidence and have this unique experience.” For all students, the GBC production is an opportunity to experience new things and gain confidence to perform in front of the whole school. A lot of students who participated in the GBC production love how their peers come out of their shells and gain confidence. Many students gain new friendships while practicing for the production which has been a fun activity after school. Kishter believes the production went very well and she is mainly “proud that everyone was committed and wanted to be there, and that Glenelg High School is part of such a kind and special community.”
Furthermore, many of Glenelg’s students in the audience loved the GBC production and enjoy encouraging and supporting our special needs students to produce an entertaining production. Glenelg High School Sophomore student, Jennifer Park, speaks for many other students when she claims that, “I personally loved the GBC play and watching Shrek. I loved the part where Shrek and all the other characters fought the dragon and saved the princess. I think the characters acted very well and Jamal’s humor and acting definitely made the show so fun to watch!”. Many Glenelg students, staff, and parents loved the plot and characters of the production, Shrek who was played by one of our special needs students, Jamal. Many students claim that the performers were very well-prepared and appeared that they really enjoyed performing Shrek. Park further claims that many students “love how we have a GBC program at our school because it involves special needs kids and gives them an opportunity to practice and produce a production. I think it is very nice how we can give them the same opportunities that regular students have.” Many parents and students are very proud and in favor of our GBC production we have at Glenelg High School.
