By Sofia Weddle As expected, this year’s PFW Fall 2018 RTW brought a gust of 40 degree weather, burnt color palettes, and plenty of high necklines. Designers truly brought their A-game on the runway, which ranged from a lush forest to a luminescent path of optical illusion. have anticipated was a disco-era inspiration. 2017 became the year of a revitalized 90s, but could 2018 be the new 80s?
The week kicked off with the brand Jacquemus, which took a seemingly modern take on sheer tops and slip dresses. However, even Jacquemus wasn’t free from huge hoop earrings, poofy sleeves, or MC Hammer-esque palazzo pants. From February 26th on, almost every brand showcased contemporary 80s trends. Megan McKenzie, a Junior at Glenelg, believes that “The 80s are coming back because we are looking back to the past for our style... I like how we are borrowing certain 80s aspects, but mixing them with modern styles.” Christian Dior designed bulky metallic jackets and mirrored retro sunglasses. Givenchy filled its lineup with animal print coats and leather highwater pants. Yohji Yamamoto beckoned in mountainous teased hair and New Wave reminiscent face paint. Perhaps the most obvious 80s-inspired show was that of fashion brand Miu Miu. No model strutted without at least Jersey Shore high hair; pastels, blacks, and neons intermingled without a second thought; vintage motorcycle jackets and acid-wash jeans were a staple; and checkered, patterned wool dominated. One might have guessed Molly Ringwald was there herself. Of course, famed 80s brands Lacoste and Vivienne Westwood made their appearance on the Paris stage. During the 1980s, Lacoste was the go-to brand for everything preppy and tennis. While the private-school look has since been elevated to contemporary fashion standards, the plaid prints, wallpaper-esque patterns, chunky golf sweaters, and slouchy denim still prevail. When Vivienne Westwood’s designer husband took the runway with his clothing company Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, the audience took both a blast to the past and the future. Right from the start began an eclectic mix of vibrant colors, high fashion drag queens, unbelievably high heels (although not quite near the height of Lady Gaga’s infamous 10-inch Alexander McQueens), flowing white ruffles, animal print, purple dyed hair, and grandma-inspired florals. Sounds overwhelming? It was. However, Kronthaler pulled it off in the most eloquente ode to the 80s Paris might ever see. After a whirlwind of haute-couture fashion houses in the already bustling Paris, what will 2018 street style actually become? The 90s surely stuck in world culture last year, but will the 80s follow suit? Allyson Kim, a Senior at Glenelg, thinks “fashion from the past is definitely coming back and I’m ready for it. Sweaters, denim on denim, and bright colors are trends that I love.” It seems high-fashion designers are also taking the affirmative. However, only time and Vogue’s Phil Oh street style photographer will tell if the pedestrian public agrees. For now, just sit back, relax, and gape at the cornucopia of 80s flair that this year’s PFW Fall RTW was. Comments are closed.
