The Rise of a Franchise

5/15/2018

By Justin Robertson

With the recent dominance of the video game
Fortnite, it has been hard for other video games and video game companies to compete with the most popular game of all time. However, the release of the game God of War 3 could help shift the video game industry back to a competitive market.

God of War 3 was released for PlayStation on April 20, 2018 and is the eighth installment of the video game series. The previous seven games were not nearly as popular as the new installment, selling 35 percent more copies than the former top selling game, God of War 3. The game starts with a young boy and his father living in the wilderness, until they get attacked by a man who has godly powers. Luckily, the father, Kratos, has super strength and defeats the man, but the two realize more will soon come. This signals to Kratos that he must take his son and run away to escape the enemies that will come after them. The plot then follows a father and his son attempting to reach the top of a mountain, while encountering many enemies and challenges along the way. The reason for the journey to the top of the mountain is unknown until towards the end of the plot, adding even more suspense to the game.

The game is full of action and outstanding graphics, but also does a great job of developing Kratos and his son’s character. Both Kratos and his son go through drastic character changes which contributes to the violence towards the end of the game. IGN said, “The combat is stellar once again, it’s bloodier than ever, and it is one of the best looking games ever released.” The game also has a free roam aspect to it where players can travel back to old destinations and collect loot that was previously unavailable. Glenelg Sophomore Cole Miller said, “God of War 3 feels different than any game I played before because I can travel between places without having to follow the exact story line.” The game is perfect for people who love action video games, but also like to view the beautiful scenery of games. However, the game is only available for PS4 users, as it is an exclusive for Playstation. Glenelg Sophomore Mohith Konduru, “ It looks like a cool game, but I haven’t played it yet.” Whether God of War 3 stays as popular as it is now, or it slowly dies like most games, it appears as if the series has taken a turn for the better.
