By Rayyan Ahmad As cable becomes more and more obsolete, streaming services, that allow for watching on the go, have begun to rise to the top of the entertainment pyramid. In order to capitalize on this change, the Walt Disney Company released its very own streaming service on November 12, 2019 in the United States, Canada, Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. For the low price of $6.99 a month for standard Disney+ and $12.99 a month with Hulu and ESPN+, Disney Plus is an ad-free streaming service that includes Disney Channel along with Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and the National Geographic. “With all the benefits of a regular streaming service, but with better shows and movies, Disney Plus is so worth seven dollars a month.” says Kevin Pak, a Junior at Glenelg High School. With many great shows and more planned for the future, Disney Plus has successfully immersed itself into the streaming business, and could possibly rise to the very top. In order to compete with other services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus presents the opportunity to watch old Disney movies and shows that have been long forgotten, such as Lizzie McGuire, Wizards of Waverly Place, and The Cheetah Girls. As Glenelg Sophomore, Colin Durkin, puts it, “With all these old shows right at my fingertips, like The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana, Disney Plus gives me feelings of nostalgia as I can recall much of my childhood through the old shows that I loved back then.” Many people agree with Durkin, and are getting Disney Plus to rewatch shows from their childhood when it was a simpler time. Another way Disney Plus competes with other streaming services is through the creation of Disney Plus originals, which are series or movies that can only be viewed on Disney Plus. Among these originals are Noelle, a holiday movie about the Christmas spirit, and The Mandalorian, a popular American space western web television series that is set in the Star Wars universe. “ I was always a big Star Wars Fan,” says Chris Heller, a Glenelg Junior, “ I watched every single movie and even the TV show, I could not get enough. Then The Mandalorian came out and I instantly fell in love and can’t wait for the next episodes in the season.” With other Disney Plus originals slated to come out with weekly episodes within the next year, fans can get excited for the chance to see the characters they love, especially Baby Yoda (so cute). Although many get Disney Plus for the sentimental value of old TV shows and movies, others get this new streaming service with eyes set on another thing: convenience. With Disney owning the Star Wars and Marvel franchises, they have the power as to which streaming service and put out which movies. Now, by bringing all these franchises under one name, Disney Plus has all the Marvel and Star Wars movies ever released all in one place. “I am a big fan of Marvel movies,” says Justin Maloney, GHS Sophomore, “but it was always a hassle to find where to watch specific superhero movies. When I heard that Disney Plus was going to have an entire section dedicated to all Marvel movies, I knew it was a win-win.” And not just with Marvel movies, Disney Plus has gathered all the movies and shows from Star Wars, Pixar, and many more to give easy access to all viewers to find what they need in one place. With more improvements underway to improve series, refine customer service, and fix overall application issues, Walt Disney’s new streaming service, Disney Plus, is set to rise as one of the top streaming platforms available to the public.
