Hawaii in Danger

6/8/2018

By David Toronto

Devastating earthquakes, hot boiling lava running rampant on the Hawaiian island, Kilauea, is causing major damage and lots of destruction in Hawaii. The Kilauea shield volcano has forced over two thousand Hawaiian residents to evacuate their homes. The volcano at this moment has 19 fissures, which are cracks in the earth that spew out lava. Kilauea has been wreaking havoc on Hawaii since May 3rd.
Governor David Ige proposed an evacuation of Kilauea on May 8th. What Volcanologists have learned, is that aviation is unsafe,he gases in the air from all of the fissures and explosions are causing a toxic mash-up of gases that could kill humans. The only safe way off the island at the moment is by boat. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and has been in a state of constant eruption since 1983, turning explosive this month. So far, at least 44 homes and other structures have been destroyed by lava from the 19 open fissures, forcing thousands from their homes. One man was seriously injured when a lava bomb hit him on the third-floor balcony of his home, shattering his leg and causing serious burns. He is in hospital and doctors say the prognosis is good. Freshman Jeffrey Winkler says, “This whole volcano situation is pretty scary, to think that all of those peoples’ houses and lives are being destroyed by that volcano is heartbreaking.”

The worst part about the situation is that it is getting worse. Scientists don’t know how many fissures there will be or how deadly they will be. Hawaii is in a dangerous situation. In some Hawaiian cultures, it is customary to worship the Hawaiian god of fire, or volcanos, Pele. To worship the god Pele, many Hawaiians are staying in their homes. With the lava flow getting closer and closer, many Hawaiians are putting their lives in the hands of their gods. Freshman Henry Soeken says, “I think the Hawaiians are stupid for risking their lives for a god, but whatever floats your boat.” Many people disagree with the Hawaiians decisions, but people need to accept their decisions and move on. All in all, the Kilauea Volcano has caused major destruction in Hawaii, and it is only going to get worse.
