By: Mack Leach You may have noticed the recent touch of color that brightens the end of the math hall on the second floor. Designed by freshman Zoe Desmond (she/her), and painted by the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) club over several months, the school’s newest mural promotes the emblematic message to be yourself. The club said it hopes the message and artwork have a positive impact on the student body.
The mural depicts a paint brush with the Transgender flag just before the bristles, with the words, “BE YOU” in the colors of the Philadelphia Pride Flag. “I wanted to have a rainbow involved to show pride,” Desmond said. “My cousin actually helped me get the idea of a paintbrush, and then the whole club came up with the words ‘be you.’” Desmond joined the club to be helpful and contribute to the Glenelg community - one that includes students across the gender and sexuality spectrum. “People should be allowed to express themselves freely in school,” Desmond said. “I’m hopeful that more people will feel comfortable sharing their true selves around other people, students and staff members.”
