By Sayo Jolayemi Less than two months after the tragic school shooting at Marjory Douglas High School, another school was run amok with the terror that is gun violence. The raging concern this time is the proximity to our beloved Glenelg, as Great Mills High School is apart of the St. Mary’s County Public School System, a mere two hour drive away from our campus. On March 20th, a gunman entered Great Mills, unleashed fire upon unsuspecting teenagers, injuring two students before claiming his own life. In the wake of this devastation one has to wonder: Where are the gun reform laws?
Apparently nowhere. With the activists who lead the debate in direct wake of these shooting the removal of guns seems to be nowhere in sight. With guns being placed in the hands of staff members as a preventative means of attack it would appear that the solution Congress has thought up is to fight fire with fire. Which may sound effective has proven time and time again the opposite, leading those affected directly and indirectly to ask; How many more lives do we need to lose for something to change? Glenelg Junior Josie Stubs echoed these sentiments, “There seems to be a new shooting every week, it’s getting really sad at this point.” Schools aren’t the only places where gun safety is an issue, just a few weeks ago YouTube’s headquarters were also infiltrated by a gunman. The answer should come easy, one would think, as America has the most mass shootings out of any other nation on the planet. But the issue taken by some with the infringement of their second amendment rights is a situation we cannot seem to solve. Unfortunately this has stunted our progress, as the script stays the same, shooting occurs, debate ensures, progress isn’t made, and we rinse and repeat seemingly forever. One would hope that soon we would put the lives of our nation's future in front of a the position of dangers guns. Glenelg Junior Megan Lydon feels this way saying, “I understand the 2nd amendment, but the guns of today were not the one’s thought about when writing the Constitution.” The difference in gun ability is very significant from two hundred years ago till now, and it seems that fully automatic weapons are causing a disturbance in gun control. While talking seems to bring about conflict, the issue is relatively short lived as we seem to find ourselves in the same situation time and time again. All we can do now, is cause change ourselves.
