The Injury Plagued Season

9/27/2017

By Matt Lipp

A playoff appearance is usually the standard for Glenelg Football teams every year. Anything less would be a failure to the students and staff members at the school. This year, the team lost a lot of important Seniors, including Dakota Davis and Connor Stanley, who helped get Glenelg to the State Semi Finals last year.

Howard County’s 2016 player of the year Wande Owens returns to try to lead the offense behind five new starting offensive linemen. New starters like Tyler Curtiss and Max Sotka have to step up and contribute if the Gladiators want to stay near the top of Howard County. Unfortunately, key players including Wande Owens, Sam Alsheimer, Garrett Mills, Chase Miller, and Griffin Doyle have gotten injured early in the season which really hurts the Gladiators. Alsheimer and Mills are out for the season while Owens, Griffin, and Miller hope to return to the field as soon as possible. The team is still confident they can be the top seed in their region for back to back years.

After a hard fought win over Hammond, Glenelg improved to 3-1 on the season. The offense started off very slow in the first half which led to a slim 7-6 lead after two quarters. Glenelg started to take over against the inferior team and eventually escaped the trap game with a 23-6 win. Even with having five star players sidelined, the Gladiators are playing good football. The Gators from Reservoir come to Glenelg on Thursday, September 28th to square off against a hot Glenelg team. The Gators are not as good of a team as they have been in recent years but they always seem to give Glenelg a tough matchup. The Gladiators will look to stay hot and extend their winning streak to four games.
