Football: The football players this year are in full rush. Following a huge win over River Hill during the second week of the season, the Gladiators seem primed to have a great year. Running back Wande Owens is a key part of the team’s game plan because of how well he executes the “run heavy scheme” that Coach Butch Schaffer loves. When asked about the the team’s chemistry, Syracuse commit and team captain Dakota Davis said, “All of us (seniors) this year are really focusing on keeping the team close and creating a family.” Even though the Gladiators lost to Wilde Lake and Long Reach, the team is working together to build connections and regain their winning spirit. Additionally, when Coach Schaffer described the pure talent that the team has this year he said, “We’ve got a really great group of guys. We should be very successful and be able to make a long run into the playoffs.” The entire school is excited because of the football team’s great success this year, and the Gladiators are looking to finally reach their goal of a state championship. Field Hockey: The field hockey players this year are in full swing. Junior, Emily Bacon said, “We have conditioning pretty much every day.” Although the field hockey girls aren’t huge fans of conditioning, it is a vital key to increasing their endurance. Due to their high fitness level, the team is able to have success throughout their season. With their undefeated streak, they plan to keep up the intensity level and work for a whole season full of wins. Their win over Marriotts Ridge was a huge confidence booster because they are consistently one of the top teams in the county. They hope to keep their undefeated season rolling through playoffs. Cheerleading: The cheerleaders this year are in full spirit. The team is preparing for their first competition of the year on November 2nd at Marriotts Ridge. Alex Fleece, the head cheer captain and vocal leader this year, has the big responsibility of having all the girls look up to her. Their catchy cheers get all of the fans rallied up. Taking their tumbling and stunts to extreme levels goes to show how much they are working towards their competitions. The cheer team this year hopes to not only get fans excited at football games, but also to succeed in their team competitions. Boys Soccer: The boys soccer team this year are in full speed. The team is off to a great start this season behind the leadership and skills of captains Guy Mobeka, Ramzy Ahmed, and Brady Brajaz. They are ending their season being a top team in the county due to their strong offensive and defensive skills. Coach Osborne pushes them to their best ability, which always pays off. Senior, Ramzy Ahmed, stated that, “The team couldn’t do it without all his support.” Hughes also gave credit to his coaches for keeping them in great shape so they are prepared physically for their games. The player’s endurance has helped them win their close games by being able to outlast their opponents. With nine Seniors on the team, the boys hope to continue on the pace that have started on and finish out the remainder of the season strong. Girls Soccer: The girls soccer team this year is in full attack. After losing eleven Seniors last year, the team consists of mostly Sophomores and Juniors. The team captains this year are Anna Callahan, Bethany Stewart, Courtney Renehan, and Kendall Anderson. With talented middies to back the strikers, the offense of the Gladiators team seems nearly unstoppable. Reflecting on the first few weeks, Anna Callahan stated, “The team seems to have great chemistry this year.” With their team pasta parties and get togethers, they have connected on a higher level which has helped their communication on the field. The Gladiator girls are glad to have a strong team to finish out their challenging season. Golf: The Glenelg golfers this year are in full stroke. With many key players coming back to the team this year, they hope to continue their success from the previous season. When asked about the team’s relationship, Senior Hayden Mikk said, “The team this year has great chemistry. It’s more than friendship. We are a really close group of guys and girls.” Michael Forester, whose teammates say has the best swing on the team, hit the school’s first hole in one at Cattail Creek Country Club. When asked about sinking a put, Tony Mobley said, “Right when it goes in, it’s a feeling of satisfaction.” All the boys and girls are confident that they can win many titles. Cross Country: The runners of cross country this year are in full stride. They have been running and training everyday to prepare for their upcoming meets. Along with improving their personal record, they also have been working towards defeating other teams in races. Sydney O’Rourke, one of the strongest runners on the Varsity team stated, “The team is working towards more unity.” It appears that the Cross Country team has a lot of talent this year but is lacking the teamwork to maximize their high potential. This year the team captains are Molly Swartz, Cole Lahman, Nate Coburn, and Nick Preece. It is obvious that the team has been running since workouts this summer to cross the finish line with unbeatable times. Volleyball: The volleyball players this year are in full strike. It is obvious to anyone who watches, they have been practicing hard and it is paying off. Senior, Maria Twigg said, “Our team bond has made our season so much more enjoyable. We won our Senior match in five sets. It was the best our team has ever played and was the most exciting game of our volleyball careers.” The girls practice hard everyday after school to perfect their bumps, sets, and serves. The team is proud to be coached by Jason Monjes, who has been by their side, encouraging them to do their best throughout the season. With this win, the team hopes to take that momentum into playoffs. Allied-Soccer: The allied-soccer players this year are in full goal. One of the stars, Nick Boxell, is already playing very well by leading the team in goals scored. Drew Palmer also sees a lot of action on the field and he gets the fans very excited. The girls and boys soccer teams show their support by attending every home game that the Allied players have. Varsity football head coach, Butch Schaffer, said, “ I love having the football guys attend allied games because you can see the excitement on the players faces to be playing in front of a big crowd.” The allied soccer team goes to show how much the community supports Glenelg. The NFL free agency period was back in March, and many players signed large contracts with new teams. Former Denver Broncos defensive tackle and Super Bowl 50 champion Malik Jackson signed the largest deal of the offseason with a six year, $85,500,000 contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Sophomore, Cole Hufman said “it’s a fair contract because he is a good player, and a lot of football players make more money than him.” Through week six, Jackson has only recorded eleven tackles and one sack. Jackson is starting to look like a bust at this point in the season. The New York Giants signed defensive end Olivier Vernon to a five year, $85,000,000 contract. In his four seasons playing for the Miami Dolphins, Vernon put up 29 sacks and 139 tackles. In the first six games for Vernon, he has only thirteen tackles and one sack. Compared to other defensive linemen, he is 18th at his position in terms of stats. Cornerback Josh Norman signed with the Washington Redskins after playing for the Carolina Panthers. Last year with the Carolina Panthers, Norman totaled 48 tackles and four interceptions, two of them returned for touchdowns. Through the first six weeks of the season, Norman has recorded 26 tackles, a forced fumble, and one interception. The $75,000,000 given to Norman is looking like it was well spent. Eric Weddle, now a strong safety for the Baltimore Ravens after signing a four year deal worth $26,000,000, played nine years for the San Diego Chargers. In those nine years, Weddle totaled 679 tackles and 19 interceptions, three returned for touchdowns. After three home games and three away games, Weddle has 17 tackles and an interception. This has helped a struggling Ravens defense over the past couple of years tremendously. There were many offensive players that signed deals as well. Lineman Kelechi Osemele signed the largest contract of all offensive players worth $58,500,000 which he will receive over a five year period. Osemele, a Super Bowl XLVII champion with the Baltimore Ravens, started in 51 games in four seasons. Sophomore, Aden Boyer said “the deal is fair because he is a good player and there are more players that are better than he is, and they make more money. Also, the general manager is the one that makes the decision and he has factored in other things like the salary cap, so he knows what’s right.” This season with the Oakland Raiders, Osemele has started every game this season, blocking effectively for his running backs. The Detroit Lions reached out to wide receiver Marvin Jones, signing him to a five year contract worth $40,000,000. Over the past three years with the Bengals, Jones started in 21 games, playing in 43 and hauled in 134 passes for 1,729 yards and 15 touchdowns. In his first six games with the Lions, Jones has totaled 29 receptions for 529 yards and four touchdowns. Jones is on pace to finish as a top ten receiver this year. Formally with the Indianapolis Colts, tight end Coby Fleener had 183 receptions in four seasons, totaling 2,154 yards. Fleener had a slow start to the 2016 season, but in weeks three to six, minus week five as the Saints had their bye week, he has 19 receptions for 202 yards and a touchdown. Fleener signed a five year, $36,000,000 contract who is playing mediocre for the money he received. Former Dolphins’ running back Lamar Miller signed a four year, $26,000,000 contract with the Houston Texans. After starting as a full back with Miami, he became a running back and had 638 carries for 2,930 yards and 19 touchdowns in four seasons. This year, Miller has carried 125 times, for traveling 520 yards and a touchdown. After changing teams, Miller is on track to have a career year. Most teams took advantage of the free agency to improve their roster, but there are still plenty of teams that could use some work. By Reagan Ahlquist and Garrett Athey
The MLB Playoffs have been an intense race and the two final teams that will battle for the World Series title are the Cleveland Indians of the American League and the Chicago Cubs of the National League. However, this journey was not an easy one for these teams because they had to play the winner of each conference to get to the championship. First, the American and National League Wild Card games decided which final two teams from each conference continued in the playoffs. The Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League faced off for their Wild Card, and the New York Mets against the San Francisco Giants of the National League competed against each other as well. The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Orioles 5-2 in extra innings and the San Francisco Giants won 3-0 against the Mets. This put Toronto in line to play the Texas Rangers in the American League Divisional Series. At the same time, the San Francisco Giants played the Chicago Cubs in the National League. The Divisional Series featured four teams from each Conference and included the winners of each of the six divisions. The American League teams included the Texas Rangers against the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Boston Red Sox against the Cleveland Indians. The National League teams were the Chicago Cubs playing the San Francisco Giants, and the Los Angeles Dodgers playing the Washington Nationals. The Conference Championship included the two teams from each conference who will play to be in the World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays played against the Cleveland Indians, after each team swept their competitor, to represent the American League in the World Series. And for the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs played to compete in the World Series after the Cubs beat the Giants in four games and the Dodgers beat the Nationals in five games. With the season coming to an end, the MLB rewards will be given out to the best players in the league. The race for American League MVP is a close one. Junior, Beau Parker, believes “Jose Altuve will win the MVP because he has the best average in the American League, and is a well balanced player who scores runs, and also drives in runs.” Another contender for the MVP award in the American League will be Manny Machado. According to sophomore Tad Henley, “Machado is a great hitter, and also plays gold glove caliber defense at third base.” Being the best teams in the MLB, the Cleveland Indians and the Chicago Cubs will surely put on a show for the World Series after the Indians beat Toronto in five games and and Chicago beat Los Angeles in six games. It will be a thrilling matchup with the Indians and Cubs showing the world just how dominant they are on the field. By Liam Day
Who do you think is Super Bowl bound for the 2016 season? There is no doubt that this year holds high expectations for all teams. Not many strong predictions can be made to determine who the strongest and weakest teams will be this year. After an extremely eventful offseason coupled with the exhilarating 2016 NFL draft, there seems to be no team without strength in their roster. The American Football Conference (AFC) was up for grabs for what it seemed like the first time in a while. Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady was suspended the first four games of the season, meaning that long time backup quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, had to step up as the starter. Another starter that had to step up is Denver Broncos’ quarterback Trevor Siemian. Following their Super Bowl 50 win in 2015, Siemian along with the Denver defense have high expectations this year. The National Football Conference (NFC) is any team’s game, particularly in the East. No team in the Eastern division has made the playoffs consecutively in over ten years. This year, two rookie quarterbacks, Dak Prescott and Carson Wentz, will start for the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. Up in the North, the division champion, the Minnesota Vikings, lost two of their key players to start the season, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and running back Adrian Peterson. The kickoff to the 2016 season began with one of the most heartbreaking losses in the first Super Bowl rematch to begin a season since 1970. The Carolina Panthers were defeated by the Denver Broncos after a missed field goal by Graham Gano in the final seconds of the game. Trevor Siemian continues to impress the league with his play after throwing for 756 yards and five touchdowns and completing sixty-seven percent of his passes in just the first four games of the season. New England played with two different backup quarterbacks through the first four games of the season. Starter Tom Brady showed that he wasn’t worried by saying, “I think Coach Belichick has the team prepared for any situation”, in an interview on Jimmy Garoppolo’s status. Lots of key players return to the field healthy this year after injury including Panthers’ wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, Steelers’ running back Le’Veon Bell, and Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. The Panthers had a historic 15-1 season without their star wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin. The team was led by MVP Cam Newton and linebacker Luke Kuechly who finished fourth in the defensive player of the year voting. The Steelers, who were known for their offense in 2015, played just fine without running back Le’veon Bell finishing 10-6. Backup running back Deangelo Williams rushed for over 900 yards to keep the offense steady. Bell had to sit out the win in week one versus the Redskins because of a suspension as well as weeks two and three due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Steve Smith Sr. returns healthy to Baltimore this year after a disappointing 5-11 season in 2015. He is relied on for a big part of their offense being the star wide receiver. The outcome of the 2016 season definitely remains in question which leaves us to wonder, who will come out on top? By Sayo Jolayemi and Jacob Kersh
This year’s NBA season will certainly be an interesting one, primarily due to the significant amount of change and interesting events that have occurred during the offseason. First and perhaps the most significant, former Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant decided to sign with the Golden State Warriors, shocking the entire league. With a starting lineup of Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Zaza Pachulia, and 2016 league MVP Stephen Curry, the Golden State Warriors have arguably constructed one of the best starting fives in NBA history – one that has the opportunity to win multiple championships. The Los Angeles Lakers have unfortunately lost the legendary Kobe Bryant to retirement, but they now have a remarkably youthful team that could be formidable in the near future. The Minnesota Timberwolves have also assembled a team of youthful players as well, and with previous Rookies of the Year, Andrew Wiggins and Karl Anthony-Towns they look capable of dominating the league in a few years. Additionally, the Dallas Mavericks have refined their lineup during the offseason by signing former Warriors members Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut. The Eastern Conference has also improved significantly in comparison to last year. The New York Knicks have acquired Derrick Rose along with Joakim Noah from the Chicago Bulls, and the Bulls have picked up Dwyane Wade from the Miami Heat. However, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers remain a force to be reckoned with – especially after their stellar 3-1 comeback performance for last year’s title. In fact, many league analysts have stated that LeBron, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love are poised for another appearance in the NBA finals. And although the Toronto Raptors, Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics did not make drastic changes, with some new key roles players they now have rosters that could contend for the number one seed in the east. As the season finally begins, one of the league’s most favored MVP candidates is Russell Westbrook. He plays with a certain swagger and demeanor that is not found in many other superstars, and because of Durant’s departure from the Oklahoma City Thunder, he will be left to lead them by himself. However, with players like; Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and James Harden, and last year’s MVP Curry, playing in their prime, the decision should be anything but unanimous. The 2016 NBA season will lead to a dynamic story arc for many athletes and teams this year, so only one question currently remains – will your favorite team end up on top? |
