It’s seven o’clock. The gymnasium lights show the excited faces below them, cheers echoing from all sides of the bleachers onto the court, the student section of Glenelg, sprinkled with gray and red, the loudest side. Glenelg starts off with a layup two minutes in, and it only gets better from there. The Gladiators make another shot just three minutes into the first quarter. Cheers bellow from the student section of the bleachers into the court as each player in favor of the team dribbles it close to the basket, sighs and “awh”s filling up the gymnasium when they do not make the shot or pass. After the first quarter, the score drains to River Hill 12, and Glenelg 9, as River Hill makes two three pointers. But they are not ahead for long. For the second quarter Tommy Walsh, number 21, is on fire, making nearly every shot he aims for in the next eight minutes. His efforts put Glenelg in the lead by the end of the first half, Glenelg 32, River Hill 19. The third quarter starts in high hopes for Glenelg, but ends in surprise. River Hill is down by nearly twenty points. Tensions are strong in the air, and players on both teams look defeated and very sweaty. Finally, fourth quarter arrives. Students especially are nervous and excited for their team to win. It starts out good, with Glenelg getting a two point shot, putting them at 53-28. But the opposing team catches up with a shooting streak of nearly ten points in a row. Then, a time out is called. Murmurs float in the heavy air, and the loud whistle blows, suddenly. It starts just as soon as it stopped. Players run out onto the court once again, looking more determined, at least on the Glenelg side. The numbers only get closer. Halfway into the last quarter, the score climbs to 63-44. People were screaming names, numbers, and cheers, as the time started to disappear from the clock. You could almost feel the adrenaline rushing through the veins of everyone in the gymnasium. And then the whistle blew for the last time. River Hill attempted a shot when the noise sounded, but it was too late. They had lost by a small landslide to Glenelg. People rush onto the court to congratulate the Gladiators. River Hill’s players look defeated, frowns and disappointment worn onto their faces. Another victory for the Glenelg Boys Varsity Basketball team. Comments are closed.
