By McKenna Rueter Ready to rumble? Glenelg High School is conducted a Staff Sumo Wrestling Tournament on April 4th during GLAD time in order to raise money for Grassroots. This organization is Howard County’s only 24 hour and seven day a week crisis center and provides a significant amount of resources for families throughout Howard County and right here at Glenelg. Grassroots spends $2,111.00 each day to run the center and it is Glenelg’s time to give back. Several teachers will be in the running to wrestle.
When asking Mr. Reigel about the even, he said “I believe this amount of money is very achievable due to the amount of student interest I have seen in the school. Watching their teachers in sumo suits will be very very entertaining for the students.” The commercials on the announcements remind and make the students excited, seeing their teachers enjoying themselves and getting involved. The staff wrestlers who took the mat included Mrs. And, Mrs. Chawkat, Mr. Male, and Mr. Rosas. All faces in the gym had smiles as they watched their teachers showdown for a good cause. After an intense battle Mr. Rosas dominated Mr. Male winning the Men's wrestling match while Mrs. Oland took the win over Mrs. Chawkat. After the match the students were buzzing with excitement. Jordyn Shumaker, a Junior, said “Watching the teachers wrestle was really fun and seeing them involved and excited about the event. I feel like this has been the most talked about fundraiser.” The event got lots of attention from both the staff and students. The Glenelg community surpassed their goal and raised $2,145.27. Thanks to the Western Horizon Counsel, the Gladiators on the Horizon Steering Committee and Gabby Diener the fundraiser was a hit. This year wrestling and who knows what next year holds for Glenelg!
