Glenelg Field Hockey: An Unforgettable Senior Day

11/12/2018

By Sarah Kang

The last home game of every season for the field hockey team is the most special day: Senior Day! Each year, the Glenelg Varsity Field Hockey team decorates the field, creates gift baskets, and makes this special event very memorable for the Seniors. October 17, 2018, was, by far, the most successful and unforgettable Senior Day ever.

Every year, the underclassmen of the Varsity team are assigned a Senior whom they will create a basket and poster for. The baskets are the size of a small laundry basket filled with items the Seniors enjoy. For example, there are various types of candies, blankets, college merchandise, etc. In addition, the posters are decorated with pictures and include the Senior’s name. Lastly, the Seniors have no idea who has them, so it is a surprise when they find out on their special day!

Along with the baskets and posters, a professional photographer takes amazing shots of the Seniors and creates banners that hang on the fence. The field is decorated with red, white, and black balloons, and the brick building is covered with the jersey numbers of the Seniors. Also, the underclassmen tape one letter or symbol on their shirt that spells out a phrase. This year, the team decided to do “We ♡ Seniors!”

This year, nine Seniors made their way down to the turf field: Tess Muneses, Sarah Cipolla, McKenna Rueter, Annie Jubb, Mallory Jubb, Jordyn Shumaker, Jenny Giampalmo, Emma LeTellier, and Ally Cornelius. With smiles on their faces, they went to their basket and were overjoyed. One Senior, Tess Muneses, stated, “I love my basket so, so much! Thank you to all the underclassmen who helped put together such an eventful day!”

This year’s Senior Day will be unforgettable because the nine Seniors were Coach Trunzo’s first players that she coached when she moved here. Coach Trunzo said, “I’ve coached them since they were Freshman, and in a snap of a finger, they are already Seniors. I am going to miss them so much.”

After the celebrations, the team had a game against the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs. The Gladiators were undefeated in county all season and so were the Mustangs. The Gladiators dominated the game. The bleachers were packed with many people including family members, Glenelg students, Marriotts Ridge fans, and the River Hill Field Hockey team. The River Hill Field Hockey team was there because they wanted to see how the Gladiators would perform against the Mustangs. The River Hill team would play the the Gladiators during playoffs, so they wanted to know what the Gladiator’s weaknesses were. The Gladiators defeated the Mustangs 5-0. Because of their glorious win, the Gladiators were named “County Champs”. Stay tuned to hear about their upcoming playoff games!
