By Griffin Hayden There may not be another sport with a drama-filled offseason quite like the NBA, and this summer was no exception. LeBron James signed with the Lakers sending yet another shockwave through the league with Hollywood now in his crosshairs. The reigning champions, the Warriors, somehow got better, adding a much scarier, and better, center in Boogie Cousins. Heat player Dwyane Wade is set to go on a multi-city retirement tour after choosing to play an extra year in the NBA before retirement. Last but not least, Giannis Antetokounmpo has bulked up in preparation for his monster season. Adam Silver made some slightly controversial changes to the rulebook, including the removal of certain color mandates on player footwear; Kawhi Leonard’s laugh became revered as something from every child’s nightmare, and that’s just grazing the surface.
As players and fans gear up for the next nine more months of pro hoops, with the season starting October 16, Glenelg students explain what they are most excited for with the 2018-2019 season starting. Proud Bucks fan, Niko Garbis commented, “I’m really looking forward to seeing my favorite team compete for a title… The Bucks have the tools to succeed, but now they have to win”. The Milwaukee Bucks are an NBA team with an MVP-candidate, star player from Greece, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Within the Bucks’ 6-1 start in the 2018-2019 season, Antetokounmpo has averaged 25.0 points per game, 14.2 rebounds per game, and 5.7 assists per game. This is by far Antetokounmpo’s best stat-line of his career. This season the world will see if “The Greek Freak” has what it takes to win MVP or take home a ring. Bilal Qamar, known Los Angeles Lakers fan, comments on the competition LeBron James faces in the Western Conference, “With the addition of LeBron the Lakers are close to another in a long line of championships. He is a key piece in the future of Lakers success, but the Lakers may need the addition of another superstar to ensure victory.” James is coming off of an MVP-caliber season, and he looks to continue this impressive play. At the moment the Lakers are 2-5. During that period James is averaging 27.6 points per game, 9.1 rebounds per game, and 8.1 assists per game. LeBron is attempting to go for his 9th consecutive Finals appearance this year, but many doubt that he can do it given the current performance of the team. Giannis Antetokounmpo is ready to prove he is special. Lebron James looks to lead his new and young team to their first playoffs appearance in 6 years. Do these players have what it takes to complete their astonishing goals? Certain Glenelg students believe it is true. No one truly knows the outcome of this season, but big things are certainly going to happen to these two athletes. Comments are closed.
